I couldn't disagree more darkknight. I believe that he is singing about the routine life of a middle class citizen who is frustrated by the monotony of his surroundings. Regardless of his luxuries (Central air, heat, comforters, furniture, books, etc) they are still material possessions that offer no real value or worth. He feels angry, pent up, but cant speak his mind for reasons unknown reasons, perhaps due to societal pressures . this only causes him more emotional distress, causing him to emotionally spiral into more frustration. I believe that this person, the nameless "you," represents a part of us all, how we wish to break away from the boring, the routine, and the monotonous, yet most of us don't speak out because we are too scared or afraid of the repercussions.

I think this song is talking about commercialism and how the average person can care less about the fact that nearly everything they own was made by exploiting the people of developing countries for cheap labor,
Also how they block out other problems in the world by just going on with their day as if nothing matters they "just keep on smiling"
I agree totally. I remember the first time I listened to this song, unlike any other track on <u>As the Eternal Cowboy</u>, I immediately got exactly what this was about. I mean, it is my own interpretation, but I didn't even get <i>that</i> with the other songs. On a related note - the reason why I love <u>Reinventing Axl Rose</u> more than this record is because the overall vision that Tom had was so much more...I don't know how you'd say it...user-friendly? I don't know, that's just me, though.
In any case, GREAT fucking song. It talks about the typical day of the typical person and how they don't even think about it. In this case, Against Me! has done the thinking for them, and I think it'd be cool if this song opened some people's eyes. Not to say that I nor Against Me! want everyone to think the same, but I think they're really on to something with this song.
I think this song is definatly the best on the new record. Actually it's this song that shifts my favor from reinventing axl to eternal cowboy. oh man the fucking breakdowns. and yeah, it might be the best of their set live.
against me! always writes the greatest lyrics. this is no different. they manage to speak the truth in every song and you can sing along and nod your head and know exactly what they're talking about. i fucking love this band.
in my opinion... it seems to be about routine and how everything is all the same. our lives our so predictable. and the last several lines reveal the second theme, which is that of that we never let anything out that should be let out. the truth is so repressed. originality and creativity are repressed. and society is regressing in part because of this. beautiful song.
