The Disco Before the Breakdown Lyrics
If you follow the jaw line down over the heart,
the curves of your bone and muscle that make up your head to toe...
It's just skin and thread, stitches and ligaments,
words that we spoke only to regret.
And I know they're going to laugh at us when they,
when they see us out together "holding hands" like this.
They wouldn't understand it if we told them all the reasons,
not that I think this deserves any kind of explanation.
And we'll, we'll make it up so we've got a smile painted on all the time,
no matter what it's like on the inside.
We'll keep this, keep us like a secret,
'cause if my family and friends ever found out about
the things we could never be,
haunts we'll all keep, so fucking bittersweet.
And I know they're going to laugh at us when they,
when they see us out together "holding hands" like this.
They wouldn't understand it if we told them all the reasons,
not that I think this deserves any kind of explanation.

Everyone complains that this song isnt "against me" sounding enough. Fuck them all. This is the greateset song they have ever written. Absolutely beautiful, it's a shame they can't play it live.
This is in my five or so favorite songs of all time.
I'm surprised no one has commented on this song. I think it is a wonderful song, It's one of my very favorites. It reminds me of Romeo and Juliet, two people in love but unable to show it. The bittersweetness of every stolen moment, knowing that if they are caught it will be their last, yet risking everything for just a few more seconds.
im pretty sure its about a gay relationship but i think its an unspoken thing. i think gabel had it in his head when he was writing it but never actually brought it forward and said "gay rights ftw" or anything. this is one of my favorite songs of all time. if im in the right mood and i hear this song and i get really into it im almost in tears of joy just hearing it. the reason why i dont think its just an ordinary straight couple who people dont like together is because it simply doesnt make sense. tom gabel doesnt write love songs out of thin air, theyre either really personal to him or have some strings attached and as far as i know gabel has always been real anti homophobic.
Looking back and listening to against me's discography I really believe this like most songs are him referencing laura like this whole ep is a fair nod to everyone that things are gonna be different but here's one last hoorah, a high note to look back on what we saw as tom gabel and the albums preceding are more of laura taking over
"Both 'The Disco Before The Breakdown' and 'Tonight We're Going To Give It 35%' are about gender dysphoria." - Laura Jane Grace herself http://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/1x6vt7/hi_im_laura_jane_grace_ask_me_anything/cf8oj9x

@LulusXe Same. When she sings "so fucking bittersweet" and then the horns... fucking unbelievable!

I've heard this song is about a homosexual couple.
I love how this whole CD is so different from the rest of Against Me!'s stuff, yet still so very excellent.
"The Disco Before The Breakdown" is easily the greatest 7" I've heard in my entire life, front to back. And this song just brings it all together. The song brings a slight ambiguity at points juxtaposed with the rest of it's straightforwardness.
I've heard that the song itself is mainly about relationships and the social stigma of when the people around you don't agree with your choice in a significant other. So it could refer to either homosexual relationships or just odd relationships in general. Either way the song is amazing. The brass brings it all together.
yeah i cant belive only 1 person has commented this song. its fucking amazing. its about 2 people that cant be together for certain reasons
Actually, 4 other people have commented on this song, it's just that it's on here twice; under 'Disco Before The Breakdown' and 'THE Disco Before The Breakdown'
