In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. For those of you that don't know, Liam did a show back in the late 90's for MTV. The show was called Sifl and Olly. Rock n' Roll sock puppets. wikipedia has a history is your interested. In the show Sifl and Olly were friends with a rocker named 'Zafo.' I believe that is what Liam is saying, Zafo, not Zafron, or Zawfa or whatever ppl are trying to call him. Whether or not that is the Zafo that he is talking about in this song I do know.

I like Ocean Bloom's comment. It shows a lot about the American pop/punk culture and viewpoint, especially at that time. Everything was "whateva". Even though the song was completely random and didn't mean anything when written, it says heaps that so many people identify with it.
