In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
There's a hole in the wall
With a light shining in
And it's letting me know to get up
It's time to begin
Oh there is nothing to lose
'Cause it's already lost
In a runaway world
Of confusion
I'm gonna take it
That's why I fight fire with fire
Oh I'm burning inside and my heart is a-cryin'
Fire with fire
I don't want to lose this flamin' desire
Standing alone
In a crowded room
I can feel a chill in the air
I'm shakin'
I'm miles away
I want to cry out loud
I want to fight till the end
I won't let 'em take me alive
That's why I fight fire with fire
Oh I'm burning inside and my heart is a-cryin'
Fire with fire
I don't want to lose this flamin' desire
Standing alone
In a crowded room
I can feel a chill in the air
I'm shakin'
And you know I'll fight fire with fire
Oh I'm burning inside and my heart is a-cryin'
Fire with fire
'Cause I'm never gonna lose this flamin' desire
With a light shining in
And it's letting me know to get up
It's time to begin
Oh there is nothing to lose
'Cause it's already lost
In a runaway world
Of confusion
I'm gonna take it
That's why I fight fire with fire
Oh I'm burning inside and my heart is a-cryin'
Fire with fire
I don't want to lose this flamin' desire
Standing alone
In a crowded room
I can feel a chill in the air
I'm shakin'
I'm miles away
I want to cry out loud
I want to fight till the end
I won't let 'em take me alive
That's why I fight fire with fire
Oh I'm burning inside and my heart is a-cryin'
Fire with fire
I don't want to lose this flamin' desire
Standing alone
In a crowded room
I can feel a chill in the air
I'm shakin'
And you know I'll fight fire with fire
Oh I'm burning inside and my heart is a-cryin'
Fire with fire
'Cause I'm never gonna lose this flamin' desire

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
great song! think its about war
Oh there is nothing to lose 'Cause it's already lost In a runaway world Of confusion I'm gonna take it
@hossynossy4 You're absolutely correct. It is about war and surviving during a war or surviving any kind of major challenge. I was a pro bowler for 10 years. I've won over 50 scratch tournaments in my 47 years of bowling. I listen to this song in my car at times on the way to tournaments.
Then why post here for a song you dislike? Go post on Metallica's page.
@AquilaCat I agree with you. Post a derogatory comment about the song on the Metallica page. Kansas has been around in the Rock n Roll industry 15 years longer than Metallica and they're a classic Rock band. Metallica is a Heavy Metal Band
2 different types of music. Metallica is great band but,if it wasn't for Kansas there would never be a Metallica!!
This song is great to listen during a long run :)
This my all-time favorite Rock song. I'm a 50% VA disabled military veteran. I served 14 years altogether and I know this song is about our American troops both at war,as well as those of our troops who have the unfortunate ordeal on ever having been a POW. These lyrics to this song are so great. "Standing alone in a crowded room,I could feel a chill in the air I'm shaking. I'm miles away,I want to cry out loud,I'm going to the end I won't let em take me alive"That's why I'll Fight Fire With Fire"!! This song is what music is all about.
Metallica's Fight Fire with Fire is WAY FUCKING better
@master smuggler It is a totally different song. I like them both.
@master smuggler
@master smuggler
Fight fire with fire from Metallica is about a 4 minute song. I listened to the first 2 minutes and I couldn't tell if it was a song...more just yelling...l couldn't listen to the rest and I actually like some heavy metal such as skillet.
