Don't Take Me for Granted Lyrics

I'm your worn-in leather jacket
I'm the volume in your fucked up teenage band
Pack of smokes and a six pack
I'm the dreams you had walking down the railroad tracks
You and Me

I'm your first taste of romance
I'm your first broken heart on a Saturday night
Guys like us ain't got no chance
But I'm the thing that keeps you and me alive
But not forever

So take me down the road
Take me to the show
Something to believe in
No one else knows
But don't take me for granted

I'm the blood on your guitar
I'm that wave you caught back in 1975
I'm as strong as a thousand armies
I'm as soft as a petal on a long stem rose
I am love

So take me down the road
Take me to the show
Something to believe in
No one else knows
But don't take me for granted

I'm with you when you're born
Take me with you when you die
All the reasons why
Don't take me for granted

So take me down the road
Take me to the show
Something to believe in
No one else knows
But don't take me for granted

I'm with you when you're born
You can take me with you when you die
All the reasons why
Don't take me for granted

Don't take me for granted
No, no, no
Don't take me for granted
No, no, no

Don't take me for granted

This shows the depth of Ness's Abilities. Its such a touching song. Social D arent mearly some punk band and dismissed as that. They have proven they are a great band. Perhaps one the great bands of all time.

It's some of the best punk rock I've heard, even out of Social Distortion, in a long time, but I'm struggling with the meaning behind these lyrics. The first verse seems to be speaking to punk rock and its scene; the second speaks of the insight music grants its listener in times of love; the third some combination of the two. I identify a lot with the love part, but I have to wonder if Ness is trying to send some sort of anthemic message to 'the scene' and the wave of new bands that have hit it big recently?

Either way, damned good rock'n'roll.

Ness said this song is a tribute to Dennis Danell. Apparently this song was written a few days after his death. Reread the lyrics. It makes perfect sense.

Damn good song.

Well, its duhhhhh...The song is about LOVE. It said right there in the lyrics. "I am love". He is saying what love is in his views. Love is the worn out leather jacket. Love is the thing that keeps you and me alive, but not forever. So, it's just about love.

Also this song got me thinking really really deep. Love keeps us alive? So what is hope? Can hope be only probable and not a gurantee? Like in religions, hope is everywhere, but hope is only a 50 50 change: Hopeing that you lose weight fast, hopeing that the war in Iraq will end, hopeing for more money and more food. But I don't think hope will do the trick. Maybe love will. Love is the thing that can gurantee happiness in which hope has not fulfilled all the time. Love for who you are with your weight, love for stopping the war and bringing peace, love for giving food to the poor and accepting what you have. Love seems more realistic in today's little world than hope. eh??

This song is abouth life, and all the good things. Don't take me for Granted is just that. Life is a gift and it begins when were born and it end when we die! Take me to the show, Something to beleive in is abouth the scene, I think . Its like a shelter where you can go. So Life is there for you, It's what you make of it! SD is fucking asome!

Not only is the song about Dennis Danell, it's about his best friend from his teenage and adult life dying unexpectedly. I saw Social D at Canes in San Diego in 2001 at their first show back since Dennis's death. I didn't know the whole story about why they didn't play for a few years. After Ness played the song it made so much sense. He poured his entire heart out when he played the song. I was completely sold on Social D after that show. Punk rock is about telling a story that your audience can understand. Although my best friend is still alive, I can understand how much Dennis meant to Mike and I shouldn't take my best friend for granted.
