Canadian Rose Lyrics
Autumn air it carries me there
Less than an hour to go
Six hundred miles an hour
And still it feels so slow
I'm trying to get back to Burlington
To a square in the center of town
To a spot on a wooden table
Where her feet didn't reach the ground
And when she kisses me it tasted like cinnamon
And her skin smells of cider and rose
And when she looked at me we both got quiet
And my heart beats so hard we were in so close
Once for such a beautiful while that still makes me smile
And she called me her ugly American
And I would call her my Canadian flower
And I don't think that we'll ever get there again
We had such power
And she would call me her ugly American
And I'll remember my Canadian rose
Especially when the fall comes to Burlington
We were in so close
I finally made it this town looks rearranged
I don't know these people anymore
But in the best ways not much else has changed
From the way it was before
And at least they still have this certain table
Where I once carved a particular name
I run my finger through the weathered carving
And I almost can feel the same
And my mouth it almost tastes just like cinnamon
As I ponder what my pilgrimage means
And I try to figure out where Vancouver is from here
And I listen to the leaves
If only for a beautiful while that still makes me smile
And she called me her ugly American
And I would call her my Canadian flower
And I don't think that we'll ever get there again
We had such power
And she would call me her ugly American
And I'll remember my Canadian rose
Especially when the fall comes to Burlington
We were in so close
And every single hope and dream I could ever conjure up
Passionately springs in me and all things are possible
Plausible and perfectly both of ours forever after and every day
At least it seemed that way
Once for such a beautiful while that still makes me smile
And she called me her ugly American
And I would call her my Canadian flower
And I don't think that we'll ever get there again
We had such power

Totally agree. Great song. Questions, Burlington is in VT (rather close to Canada). Why is he wondering where Vancouver is? Is he suggesting that is where she lives now? Or did she always live in Vancouver and they met as kids (where her feet didn't reach the ground) in Burlington? I would have thought maybe at summer camp or something, but the Autmn air carries him there, not Summer air. I dunno, any thoughts?
The song is referring to Burlington, Ontario a part of the "Greater Toronto Area".

@pinback I had the exact same questions! and Burlington Ontario is still also a continent away from Vancouver, so yeah I guess she moved there? I just assumed "and her feet didn't hit the ground" was indicating she was a petite girl especially compared to his large "ugly American" self John Popper. His songs seem very personal in terms of details, so whatever the reason for "wherever Vancouver is from here" (bout 2K miles away :) he had a reason I guess lol.

It could be they met at college. Autumn air = fall semester or when one would return to college. Vancouver could be where she was from.
To me this song reminds me of a romance that I had when I was young.
To me the most telling verse is where he says that the town looks rearranged. I think the girl was Canadian from Vancouver but lived in Burlington at some time when he also lived there.
He revisits the town and sees a place where he carved their initials into a tree and it makes him think about all the places he's been since then. And no matter where he goes she's in his head and his heart, and always when he thinks of her he wonders where Vancouver is from there.
Finally, he wraps things up by saying that this moment in time continues to give him hope that he'll one day find something similarly passionate and powerful again.
This song is particularly meaningful to me. My first love went to school in Burlington, VT for a couple of years, and I would travel several hundred miles every other weekend to be with her. We even used to listen to this exact song and discuss how it was similar to us.
To me the song is about a passionate love affair that he had with a Canadian Girl while they were both living in Burlington. Eventually their lives drifted apart (perhaps she had to go back to Vancouver). Several years later he is inspired to take a trip back to the town and reminisce about what he had with her.
I love the line: "And every single hope and dream I could ever conjure up Passionately springs in me and all things are possible Plausible and perfectly both of ours forever after and every day"
He is suggesting that he believes he could someday have love like that again, even though "I dont think that well ever get there again."
Now, even though I am no longer with my first love, perhaps someday I too will take a trip back to Burlington someday, to remember the powerful relationship I had with her, and to come full circle with this song that means so much to me.

one of travelers best
Burlington, Ontario is a Canadian town not all that far from the Greater Toronto Area.
It's not at all hard to believe that Blues Traveler would have passed through there while on tour, and while there might have mused about how far their next gig was within the next day or two (reference to Vancouver).
"To a spot on a wooden table Where her feet didn't reach the ground"
If this isn't a reference to the setting of a strip club, I can't decide what else it might be.
"And when she kisses me it tasted like cinnamon And her skin smelled of cider and rose And when she looked at me we both got quiet And my heart beat so hard we were in so close"
The picture painted by these lines nearly compels me to rest my case.
This is John Popper musing over the night of kindness and mock affection shown to him by a stripper with which he was enamored for an evening.
I would bet on it.
@PineapplePrince where did you get stripper out of those lines lol? cmon man
