You Know You're Right Lyrics
Whether this song was an indication of Kurt's suicide is something that no one can be certain of. Because there will always be the question of 'Did he really kill himself or was Courtney to blame?' I myself don't believe she was responsible for his death. But I do think she contributed to the one of the many possible reasons of why he killed himself.
Anyway. To me, this song marks rock bottom for Kurt. I think that when he wrote this, he was at the end of his tether with everyone and everything.
The first part in this songs seems to be blatantly directed at Courtney Love. "I will never bother you. I will never promise to I will never follow you. I will never bother you."
'I will never bother you. I will never promise to' It would make sense that Kurt probably wrote this song after Courtney and himself had had an argument or had split up or whatever. Where he says 'I will never promise to' is like he's saying he won't promise that he will never bother her, because he knows he will.
'I will move away from here. You won't be afraid of fear' For someone with such a depressed and troubled mind, not to mention half pie scattered from the drugs, the lyric 'I will move away from here' seems like he was referring to suicide. As in, not to move from one town or city to another. But move away from everything permanently. The following lyric 'You won't be afraid of fear' supports this. (It sounds as though he is talking to himself at this point in the song.) If you guys have ever read 'The Kurt Cobain Journals' and watched different interviews with Kurt, you will know that he was always afraid of his music becoming mainstream like everything else and afraid of the grunge scene that he had created dying out. (Another thing that supports this was when Kurt quoted a lyric from a song called Hey,Hey,My,My (Into the Black) by Neil Young on his suicide note, stating: "It's better to burn out than to fade away.") It seems he decided it was better to end his life than to be around to watch his music and fans someday fade away.
Where he says "No thought was put into this. I always knew it would come to this" Is either referring to his split up with Courtney or a hint as to him thinking about his plans for suicide. Like, he might be saying there was never any thought put into him committing suicide, yet he always knew it was going to happen someday.
Where he says "Things have never been so swell." When he sings 'Things have never been so swell' you can hear a tone of stupidity when he says 'SWELL'. Which therefore seems like he's being a little sarcastic when he's saying 'Things have never been so swell' which obviously seems like he's only joking/pretending that things are so great.
Where he says "I have never failed to fail" This lyric is kind of self explanatory. He obviously thinks that he fails in every situation no matter what he does.
Where he starts yelling 'PAIN' over and over again, it seems as though this is the only thing that he is feeling, is pain. Judging by the tone of anger and grunt that it is sung in and the amount of times it is repeated.
Where he says "It's so warm and calm inside. I no longer have to hide" This lyric comes after him screaming 'PAIN' repeatedly. It seems as though he wrote it this way to show how from one minute he can be depressed and angry to being warm and calm the next minute. I believe this was definitely due to drug use. He would've been feeling down and depressed, he'd have his fix and feel calm and content. And like he has to no longer hide from all the bullshit that brings him down. So really, I think that when he screams 'PAIN' he's referring to the pain of being sober and having to deal with everyday life without any artificial happiness.
Where he says "Lets talk about someone else. Steaming soup against her mouth" Where he says 'Lets talk about someone else' it seems as though he's kinda saying 'Okay enough of me and my feelings, because they don't even matter. Let's talk about Courtney and about something that isn't even important.' Possibly. I myself still try to think of what that specific lyric could mean. It's a bit weird.
Where he says "Nothing really bothers her. She just wants to love herself" Is quite self explanatory if you know of Courtney Love. Lol. It seems as though he is saying that nothing really bothers her, nothing really matters to her, all she wants to do is love herself.
And finally when he says "You Know You're Right" I think it is the most difficult lyric of the song to try and figure out if your a deep thinker and over-analyzer like me ><
I think he's either saying You know You're right towards society. The media. Courtney. And everyone who is always telling him what to do. What he's doing wrong and what he should be doing. As in, he knows their all right but he doesn't want to listen or he doesn't agree with them.
Or he could be saying You Know You're Right to himself. Trying to convince himself that he is right in his own mind within a world full of wrong.
To be honest, I think that there are so many possibilities of what all of Kurt's lyrics truly meant to him compared to what we think they might've meant.
When you realize that these words came from the mind of someone who was deeply depressed, scattered on drugs and was hardly ever in a clear state of mind and yet he still managed to make all of his lyrics have meaning, that is an absolutely amazing musician.
I also thought I'd just share my thoughts on why things ended the way they did. I truly believe that Kurt didn't end his life because he was depressed. He ended his life so that his music and the name of 'Kurt Cobain' and 'Nirvana' didn't fade away or end up forgotten. So that in years to come, people still appreciated and had love for the music that he made.
And look now, 18 years gone and still one of the biggest, most loved and appreciated bands in the world. If he failed at everything else, that's one thing he succeeded at.
:)
When he says "Lets talk about someone else. Steaming soup against her mouth" I think he is trying to change the subject when he says the "Steaming soup against her mouth" line. Only trying to help since you couldn't figure it out. Thanks. (:

A lot of good facts and ideas in your interpretation. One thing that I don't think I read in your analysis is the fact that Cobain had a vicious stomach ailment that kept him in near constant pain--except, of course, when he used heroin. The pain factor likely contributed to his suicide.

I agree about Courtney being a factor and that it would be impossible to blame her solely for his death. She was probably a nightmare to be married to ("buried" sang Kurt in "All Apologies"), but with his addiction, depression, and physical pain, he had many other factors...

@kittysixx I've wondering what the meaning of the title of this song could mean for a while now... and I think I finally figured it out

You know when you're down or depressed you always have that voice in the back of your head telling you that you're worthless or even that you should take your own life. But somehow you push yourself to keep going and have this strange hope that everything will be alright one day... I think the words 'you know you're right' refer to when you get to that point when you no longer have hope and just quit fighting for you...

But somehow you push yourself to keep going and have this strange hope that everything will be alright one day... I think the words 'you know you're right' refer to when you get to that point when you no longer have hope and just quit fighting for you life and start actually believing all these nasty thoughts that grow in your head like 'you know no one loves you and no one will miss you when you're gone'...
if you take it to an extreme you can even consider that when Kurt wrote this song he already decided (or at least considered) comiting suicide and in this song he just tells himself he's doing the right thing (even tough 'no though was put in to this' because now the voices in his head make it obvoius that he was always meant to end that away)
The full lyrics of the version that leaked 9/22 are:
I will never bother you I will never promise to I will never follow you I will never bother you
Never speak a word again I will crawl away for good
I will move away from here You won't be afraid of fear No thought was put in to this I always knew it would come to this Things have never been so swell I have never failed to fail

@aldeayeah So these were the original lyrics? where did you get this, why are there two sets of lyrics, as these lyrics aren't in the song.

This song was directly written about Courtney in early 1993. It was played live 4 times, 3 times they played it during Soundcheck (Which have not surfaced on the net), and they also played it once live in Illinois on 11/23/93. This version has surfaced. The lyrics on the top of the page are to the 11/23/93 version. Kurt Cobain also recorded this song in January of 94 with producer Robert Lang. Part of the studio version has surfaced. This is known infamously for being Kurt Cobains last recorded song. it is not. Kurt did many home demos before his death. This song will be released at the end of this year on a Greatests Hits CD. It will most likely appear on next years (Highly Anticipated) Nirvana Box-Set. For all of you who think this song is a huge deal, it's really not. Kurt did many other great "unheard" songs that most likely have been done in the studio. But yes, this song is written about Courtney, and the studio versions lyrics are completly different. As a matter of fact the lyrics used in the live version are much, much more advanced than the ones used in the studio version.
Kurt wrote this song as a sarcastic reference to his wife Courtney Love, at a very turbulent time in their relationship (shortly before his suicide), the title and predominant lyric: "you know your right" and also "nothing really bothers her, she just wants to love herself", both refer to Kurt's frustration with Courtney. Before Nirvana released this, Courtney Love played a live acoustic version of it called "You've Got No Right" for an MTV Unplugged special with her band Hole. She sang "Hey" instead of "Pain." Here's how she introduced the song: "This is a song that Kurt wrote. We...

I think this song is about Kurt wanting to divorce Courtney. Rosemary Carrol, the attorney of Cobain & Love have told that Courtney called her to tell Kurt was gonna leave her, and that Kurt called her on March 1994 to tell Carrol that he wanted Courtney´s name taken out of his will. Kurt wanted to divorce Courtney, that is a fact
@LayneCobain34
I hate songs about negative subjects such as
Divorce, which is f'g pain and heartache........
Get to your nearest Psy. Hospital if your hurting so much to the point depression has consumed your entire being.

The CIA likely split Kurt and Courtney up because they supported Reagon Kurt apparently didnt Those supporters are HATERS Communistic f'heads

This is what Kurt hated, people talking about him rather than his music, and the song is about leaving courtney, not suicide, look at it...it tells of the relationship between the two, he was sick of it, that she was so self centered and she wanted it all for herself, and that he felt pain and anger towards her. SO TALK ABOUT THE FUCKING SONG, EVEN WITH HIS MUSIC HE LEFT BEHIND, HE STILL CANT MANAGE TO GET WHAT HE WANTED. NIRVANA WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN, ESPECIALLY THEIR MUSIC.
he was addicted to heroin, and this was the last song he wrote before he shot up and blew his head off :/ i think its pretty clear, maybe just cause i listened to this song over and over when i felt the same way. "you know youre right" he probably had about a million people telling him what to do, giving him advice, telling him things that he knew were true, but still didnt listen to. he wants to kill himself and is telling everyone else before he does that they were always right. but just cause you hear all the right words doesnt mean you can listen..
I will never bother you I will never promise to I will never follow you I will never bother you
Never speak a word again I will crawl away for good
he hates himsself, and feels like a burden, so he thinks it would be in everyones best interest to dissappear.
I will move away from here You won't be afraid of fear No thought was put in to this I always knew it would come to this
he never had much hope, and always had the thought in the back of his mind that came out the day he died.. you wont be afraid of fear, he means, i think, that nobody would have to fear he was hurting them anymore by his actions and choices.
Things have never been so swell I have never failed to fail
Pain You know you're right life sucks just as much as always, and again hes telling everyone else that they were right about him.and his mistakes.
I'm so warm and calm inside I no longer have to hide Let's talk about someone else
hes on heroin, and since he already admitted everyone else was right about it, he doesnt want to talk about it.
Steaming soup against her mouth Nothing really bothers her She just wants to love herself
courtney not caring. dumb bitch. she just wants to love HERSELF not him
at the end he just keeps saying you know youre right, his last words to the world basically before he killed himself. the was saying he was leaving so as to not feel like a burden any longer, adadmitting he knew he was wrong and knew what he was probably hearing from people about his adiction and his BAD life choices was true, he just couldnt bring himself to listen, but felt bad for not listening all the same, so its almost an apology for not taking the advice, and a goodbye at the same time
Finally, someone who got it. It is so obvious, yet nobody seems to get it. Courtney is my mom.

I also put advice into action. Desperately wanting and needing the advice to be correct, and most importantly, quickly effective.

Courtny Love had Kurt killed. Fucken bitch, someone should put a shotgun in her mouth and pull the trigger. There was a sloppy investigation, I personally think she paid the cops to keep quiet. It was just left that Kurt commited suicide. Which if I remember correctly, Kurt supposedly shot up before he "committed suicide." The amoung of heroin that was found in his system was so great, that he would have died almost instantly he couldn't have shot himself! Thats only one thing. Go to cobaincase.com for more. As for this song, it rocks. I heard it on the radio and had this weird creepy feeling. Almost like Kurt was singing from the grave. I think he wrote this song to Courtny. How much he hated being married to her.
I feel dumb replying to this post as it's nearly 8 years old, however I feel obliged. Personally, I don't have an opinion on the matter as I don't believe any of us will ever really know what truely happened with Kurt.

What you are not and nobody else is taking into account is his tolerance....
What you are not and nobody else is taking into account is his tolerance. There is no way to quantify someones tolerance to the drug once they are dead. Kurt was a daily heroin user (As I am myself, this knoweledge is from personal experience and I can back it up with sources via pubmed and other medical journals if anyone requests)
When you do a drug, your body begins to tolerate it. You have to use larger doses to get the same effect. Being a daily heroin user myself, I can shoot myself up with an amount that would drop you dead instantly, and it won't even phase me, it will just make me feel normal, not even high. I can probably shoot myself up with 10x the amount (The L.D. 50, The lethal dose for 50% of intolerant people) that it would take to kill you.
hmm, good point, i always considered that as a very faint possibility, of tolerance, but i was under the impression that even with tolerance there is a point where regardless, that amount of the drug is just way too much for anyone to handle, but i guess after relistening to nirvana and being a little older and not so eager to think "oh man kurt got murdered", your ideas are pretty realistic, and unprovable really, as measuring the tolerance of a dead man is as far as i know impossible, so i guess that fact isnt so strong as evidence,...

Regarding "junkhead393": Kurt Cobain shot up three times the LD 50 is it likely that he would be still able to shoot himself? I personally believe that he killed himself... he faced divorce, loss of interest (depression), was in constant pain in his stomach and on top of it all he was bipolar. However there are strange things about his death that make you wonder. cobaincase.com has some interesting points... like how his note sounds like a letter announcing him leaving Courtney until you read the "questionable" handwriting at the bottom.

what people dont get is that, kurt cobains lyrics are the last thing to fully come together. This song was written long before it was recorded. He played it a couple times and then when recording at home time came around he was piecing words together. then studio day came around he probably was in a lousy ass mood (considering the timeline) and focused his lyrics on something about a fight or a popular mood he was in constantly...sarcasm. He recorded his parts, probably laid them down once or twice at most. and that was that. so the "i have never failed to fail" probably is just an inacurate lyric that just fit. It sounds like hes trying to say " i have never felt or felt pain" but had to slip that extra line in to make it fit. Any musician who writes lyrics or riffs knows about stuff like that. in fact it can really drive you crazy, cuz nobody prounounces words like "a-gain", or "cal-i-for-nye-a".they do that to make it fit into a song. Do you understand what im getting at? Anyway this song rocked. and i wanted to put that out there to those who are trying to decipher that line and its meaning. thats one of a couple possibilites. please dont argue with me thank you.
@Cleanruss that might be true. In the "live tonight sold out" home video, Cobain says in an interview "Music comes first", talking about the process of writing. This is very different in artists like, for example, Trent Reznor, who has said sometimes "Lyrics comes first" :)

i've read a lot of lyrics for this song, and they're all similar, but this one is completely different from everything i've seen. and i think this is probably gonna be next to teen spirit once the studio version comes out after all the law suits are settled. does anyone know if any of the song besides the aragon version is on the internet?
this song fuckin rocks. but it sucks bc the radio isnt playin it anymore. oh well, i just downloaded it. well yeah, this song rocks, i love it. and courtney love killed kurt that bitch deserves to die. ok, im done, bye!
