I also thought I'd just share my thoughts on why things ended the way they did. I truly believe that Kurt didn't end his life because he was depressed. He ended his life so that his music and the name of 'Kurt Cobain' and 'Nirvana' didn't fade away or end up forgotten. So that in years to come, people still appreciated and had love for the music that he made.
And look now, 18 years gone and still one of the biggest, most loved and appreciated bands in the world. If he failed at everything else, that's one thing he succeeded at.

Whether this song was an indication of Kurt's suicide is something that no one can be certain of. Because there will always be the question of 'Did he really kill himself or was Courtney to blame?'
I myself don't believe she was responsible for his death. But I do think she contributed to the one of the many possible reasons of why he killed himself.
Anyway. To me, this song marks rock bottom for Kurt. I think that when he wrote this, he was at the end of his tether with everyone and everything.

As in, not to move from one town or city to another. But move away from everything permanently. The following lyric 'You won't be afraid of fear' supports this. (It sounds as though he is talking to himself at this point in the song.) If you guys have ever read 'The Kurt Cobain Journals' and watched different interviews with Kurt, you will know that he was always afraid of his music becoming mainstream like everything else and afraid of the grunge scene that he had created dying out. (Another thing that supports this was when Kurt quoted a lyric from a song called Hey,Hey,My,My (Into the Black) by Neil Young on his suicide note, stating: "It's better to burn out than to fade away.")
It seems he decided it was better to end his life than to be around to watch his music and fans someday fade away.

So really, I think that when he screams 'PAIN' he's referring to the pain of being sober and having to deal with everyday life without any artificial happiness.

A lot of good facts and ideas in your interpretation. One thing that I don't think I read in your analysis is the fact that Cobain had a vicious stomach ailment that kept him in near constant pain--except, of course, when he used heroin. The pain factor likely contributed to his suicide.

I agree about Courtney being a factor and that it would be impossible to blame her solely for his death. She was probably a nightmare to be married to ("buried" sang Kurt in "All Apologies"), but with his addiction, depression, and physical pain, he had many other factors...

to that point when you no longer have hope and just quit fighting for
you...

if you take it to an extreme you can even consider that when Kurt
wrote this song he already decided (or at least considered) comiting

thing (even tough 'no though was put in to this' because now the

And that terrifies me to the point to where I can barely function. I can't stand the thought of Frances becoming the miserable, self-destructive, death rocker that I've become." ..... he wasn't going to live much longer. With or without Nirvana, his wife/best friend, or heroin. He always desired to seek oblivion. And it clearly terrified him that one day, his daughter would end up like him. A failure. Yet another reason why he thought he was better off dead. I always laugh when people are under the impression he wasn't suicidal. HAH. Do some research, mate. I also had my own thoughts about the title that becomes frequently repetitive within the song, I thought it could have meant one of two things, now I know Kurt has said in interviews that many of his lyrics dint have a meaning and that it was often open to interpretation by the listeners of his music but sometimes without the intention he will have reflected his music off his state of mind at the time, so I believe it was either him repeating this phrase trying to reassure himself that killing himself and all these dark thoughts were the right choice and correct path to follow and convince himself that he was in his right mind while choosing his destiny. My other interpretation of the lyric 'You know your right' is that he was telling everyone else: Courtney, his bandmates trying to get him off heroin, the press (who had previously published news that him and Courtney were bad parents to their newborn and that he was unfit to be a parent to Francis - which I dont believe) etc, that they were all right, he sarcastically was repeating this with no genuine reasoning just trying to make them happy and get them off his case and just brush their opinions off as invalid because he knows that they think they right and there's no convincing them otherwise, so he might as well in his final time give them the satisfaction of what could convince those people that all their negative opinions about him were right because he even began to believe them himself.
Final comment is that these replies have really shown me other really valid perspectives that I had never thought of but really agree with, for example someone in the comment section brought in the quote 'killing himself to immortalize his music' which is genuinely one of the most valid reasons for why he did kill himself, he had always been depressed, addicted to heroin and had been in a long term (often unstable) relationship with Courtney, the only thing that changed is his popularity from a small cult following who listened to lyrics and liked the music for what it was, to mainstream where people listened to it for the brand and its popularity rather than actually appreciating the music. and mainstream listeners and what they brought to the nirvana following is the exact opposite of what kurt intended with his music (in my eyes at least). proven thru his response in the song in bloom referencing the macho men and jocks who didn't listen or appreciate the music for what it was and instead ignored the meanings and interpretations that Kurt had poured into this passion. I think nirvana's music unfortunately becoming mainstream resulted in Kurt losing the passion he had for music and songwriting which did seem (from research in documentaries and interviews) to be the only thing keeping him alive at times, and once things went south with Courtney and his music became mainstream led him to dark thoughts including the fact he concluded he could not be a good enough father to Francis because of his own upbringing and addiction and how his upbringing made him who he was - which at times he even knew wasnt right or healthy.
Anyway whatever the meaning for the song or his death, I will always have the deepest appreciation and fascination for Kurt Cobain and the life and legacy he's lived and left and the immortalisation of his music could keep him alive even after his truly tragic death almost 30 years ago. Rip Kurt :)

if you take it to an extreme you can even consider that when Kurt wrote this song he already decided (or at least considered) comiting suicide and in this song he just tells himself he's doing the right thing (even tough 'no though was put in to this' because now the voices in his head make it obvoius that he was always meant to end that away)

His aunt even admitted to finding a song he wrote when he was 15-17, talking about attempting suicide. Then in Montage of Heck we find out it's true that suicide was in his mind years before Nirvana. Frances, if anything, blew him over the edge. The one line that stands out is: "and a daughter who reminds me too much of what i used to be, full of love and joy, kissing every person she meets because everyone is good and will do her no harm. And that terrifies me to the point to where I can barely function. I can't stand the thought of Frances becoming the miserable, self-destructive, death rocker that I've become." ..... he wasn't going to live much longer. With or without Nirvana, his wife/best friend, or heroin. He always desired to seek oblivion. And it clearly terrified him that one day, his daughter would end up like him. A failure. Yet another reason why he thought he was better off dead. I always laugh when people are under the impression he wasn't suicidal. HAH. Do some research, mate. It's like trying to convince me the sky isn't blue.

Normal was never his thing. He needs extraordinary. Because he is terrified of sitting alone with his thoughts and getting to knw himself. Because he didn't love himself. Because no one ever loved him. Not the real him. Not the self destructive him. And he wrote this song to assure his wife that he won't do anymore harm to them. He's not killing himself because of the drugs. He's warm and calm inside as he decided this. He just wanted to be normal but couldn't bear the thought of being normal.. And once he realized not the band nirvana was not his way to the actual nirvana. He chose to move to the next life. Or the no life. Because no one commits suicide thinking about the afterlife and hell. He was just confused as fuk.

@kittysixx I loved this interpretation of the song, its probably the best I've seen and love how deeply you analysed everything I also had my own thoughts about the title that becomes frequently repetitive within the song, I thought it could have meant one of two things, now I know Kurt has said in interviews that many of his lyrics dint have a meaning and that it was often open to interpretation by the listeners of his music but sometimes without the intention he will have reflected his music off his state of mind at the time, so I believe it was either him repeating this phrase trying to reassure himself that killing himself and all these dark thoughts were the right choice and correct path to follow and convince himself that he was in his right mind while choosing his destiny. My other interpretation of the lyric 'You know your right' is that he was telling everyone else: Courtney, his bandmates trying to get him off heroin, the press (who had previously published news that him and Courtney were bad parents to their newborn and that he was unfit to be a parent to Francis - which I dont believe) etc, that they were all right, he sarcastically was repeating this with no genuine reasoning just trying to make them happy and get them off his case and just brush their opinions off as invalid because he knows that they think they right and there's no convincing them otherwise, so he might as well in his final time give them the satisfaction of what could convince those people that all their negative opinions about him were right because he even began to believe them himself. Final comment is that these replies have really shown me other really valid perspectives that I had never thought of but really agree with, for example someone in the comment section brought in the quote 'killing himself to immortalize his music' which is genuinely one of the most valid reasons for why he did kill himself, he had always been depressed, addicted to heroin and had been in a long term (often unstable) relationship with Courtney, the only thing that changed is his popularity from a small cult following who listened to lyrics and liked the music for what it was, to mainstream where people listened to it for the brand and its popularity rather than actually appreciating the music. and mainstream listeners and what they brought to the nirvana following is the exact opposite of what kurt intended with his music (in my eyes at least). proven thru his response in the song in bloom referencing the macho men and jocks who didn't listen or appreciate the music for what it was and instead ignored the meanings and interpretations that Kurt had poured into this passion. I think nirvana's music unfortunately becoming mainstream resulted in Kurt losing the passion he had for music and songwriting which did seem (from research in documentaries and interviews) to be the only thing keeping him alive at times, and once things went south with Courtney and his music became mainstream led him to dark thoughts including the fact he concluded he could not be a good enough father to Francis because of his own upbringing and addiction and how his upbringing made him who he was - which at times he even knew wasnt right or healthy. Anyway whatever the meaning for the song or his death, I will always have the deepest appreciation and fascination for Kurt Cobain and the life and legacy he's lived and left and the immortalisation of his music could keep him alive even after his truly tragic death almost 30 years ago. Rip Kurt :)
@kittysixx its now almost 2024 and his music is still having found a big community and is saving lives like my own! im so sad kurt is gone, and my mind feels like it cant accept he is, but i know he‘s happier now in the afterlife. rest in peace bud, gone too soon.
