Stepping Outside The Circle Lyrics
Here I go again
A vicious cycle without end
Seeking distance for security
A desperate act to remain free
A balance point cannot be found
This whole thing will come crashing down
DOWN! DOWN!
My fear will drag you down
Into this world that I create
Your love for me has sealed your fate
DOWN! DOWN!
My fear will drag you down
Can I trust in what I feel?
Playing that this time it’s real
Feel the strain!
All this time’s been spent in vain
My shame!
Open wounds that still remain
Decay!
As my faith is stripped away
You’ll stray!
The final price I have to pay
Digging in deeper still
The hollowness I yearn to fill
The story always ends the same
The cycle soon begins again
Stepping outside the circle!
A vicious cycle without end
Seeking distance for security
A desperate act to remain free
A balance point cannot be found
This whole thing will come crashing down
Into this world that I create
Your love for me has sealed your fate
Can I trust in what I feel?
Playing that this time it’s real
All this time’s been spent in vain
My shame!
Open wounds that still remain
Decay!
As my faith is stripped away
You’ll stray!
The final price I have to pay
The hollowness I yearn to fill
The story always ends the same
The cycle soon begins again

This song is about commitment into a relationship. The vocalist always used to back out of his relationships because he was afraid to commit, so he would move onto another girl and back down. Hence the verse "the cycle soon begins again"
brilliant guitar and drum work. the song doesnt even need words to be amazing.
This song also has the best guitar solo ever
I also think it's about commitment, but my interpretation is that it's not about moving onto other men/women due to fear to commit. I think in reaction to fear of intimacy, the vocalist has a wall up and perhaps isolates, stays to himself. Either way, what he fears the most is getting hurt (and also being afraid to hurt the person he's involved with). He's probably been scarred from being hurt in the past and is afraid to trust again.
Maybe the person he is now in a relationship with hurt him before, or it can be someone else. I also think he is afraid of hurting the other person, knowing that he will drag someone else down with him.
It's a cycle for him to avoid giving himself fully to someone else. He does not take his chances since he does not want to risk having to deal with more pain and possible rejection. Another spin on it is that he has walls up as a result of him dealing with depression.
He is questioning his ability to sustain a relationship and feels that he would burden someone else if he were to let a person into his world, which is full of pain. He knows his emotional baggage would affect any relationship, so he does not feel he cannot get too close to someone. He remains isolated and trapped in his own vicious cycle of never sustaining a meaningful, lasting relationship. It eventually deteriorates, because he cannot trust others (or himself).
