Mistress Lyrics

I stand on the brink of your mind
Living inside a nightmare from which
I just cannot awaken
Stand on the edge of your life
Just give me another moment
From which I will never awaken

Chorus
Stand on the brink of my own demise
Fallen again from another
Mistress of burden
To idolize
Hoping that one of them will decide
To let me in

To stand on the edge of the knife
Cutting through the nightmare from which
I just cannot awaken
Stand on the edge of the night
Living inside a moment
From which I will never awaken

Chorus

Look at what you done to me
You’ve become my enemy
Poisoning the world for me
Take away my everything
Weakened as I am

Chorus

I consider that the song is about the hardship brought on by idolizing women (thus the name of the song “mistress”). “I stand on the brink of your mind”/” Stand on the edge of your life” may represent the lack of importance given to him by the woman he desires or simply his incapacity to understand her (her thought/her mind/her in general). “Living inside a nightmare from which/I just cannot awaken” emphasizes the suffering of the man bound to deify women. “Just give me another moment/From which I will never awaken” is a plea to the mistress of his mind, begging her to allow him to admire her regardless of the pain that that brings. Therefore, the tragedy resides in his conscious awareness regarding his situation. I think that the lines “Mistress of burden/To idolize” represent the theme of the song (that of suffering due to total abandonment of self through idolizing women). “Hoping that one of them will decide/To let me in” shows again the duality of the situation: the wish to break free from this desire and the incapacity to feel fulfilled without it. “To stand on the edge of the knife/Cutting through the nightmare from which/I just cannot awaken/Stand on the edge of the night/Living inside a moment/From which I will never awaken” highlights again the desire to escape but the incapacity to do so. In the last lines he painfully realizes that obsession and over-admiration (as all excesses) leads to self-destruction and the transformation of the mistress into an enemy. “Take away my everything” symbolizes the loss of one’s self. The word “my” is meant to emphasize the importance of being an individual. One can consider the song the opposite of the androgyny myth (where the perfect being was split into two (the man and the woman) and the two spend their lives searching for each other in order to recreate that perfection). The song talks about the importance of not losing yourself in the other completely, about trying to keep a bit of you as well.

i think this is about someone who loved somebody but she dumped him and is now trying to move on or kill himself

@ Metallicfire...I think this is a perfect description.

Also, the fact that a mistress is a "hidden lover", kind of like he wants this person so bad but she is "poisoning the world" for him, so he can only have her if he wants to be weakened and if he gives up everything else. And I think when he says "decide to let me in" He is saying that he wants her to decide to give up the games and love him for who he is...even though he probably knows in his heart it won't happen, sadly.

This has always been my general thought for this song (thought it was the only possible interpretation but guess not), but anyway: the singer (Draiman) has a lover/wife whom he loves, but he falls for someone else hence mistress. He's struggling with both relationships because he's sincere about them both, but both of them are cold to him and get his feelings all jumbled up, almost like they're playing mind games with him. He hopes he'll get through to at least one of them but he never does, so both relationships seem like a dead end.

My Interpretation

Maybe I'm being over-analytical, but here's what I think: A friend has left this person and it is eating away at them. It's 'a nightmare from which they cannot awaken.' They keep replaying the moment of the loss, thus, 'living inside a moment from which I will never awaken.' So basically, it's about loss of friends or relationships and not being able to give them up.

@ViciousBetrayal dude. That is Exactly how I feel. I listened to Mistress the day after my best friend left me.

It seems that someone who was very dear to him and pretty much his everything (Take away my everything) left his life and he sees his life now as a total demise and that there isn't much hope left and he hates her for it but doesn't at the same time.

that sounds right, just wanted to add something. i think this special person was a woman, whom he loved (he being the singer, im assuming =P), and she left him alone, to fixate himself on the times they used to have, and then the moment when she left, and the fact that they'll never be together again. and, i figure the part where he says "To stand on the edge of the knife Cutting through the nightmare from which I just cannot awaken", that he's contemplating suicide. the edge of the knife cutting through the nightmare from which he cannot awaken, would symbolize, obvisouly, his escaping his endless torment by killing himself. so anyways, thats about all i can think of to say on this song. great song, i love the feeling david puts into his voice in all their songs.

Well, what I was gonna say about this song was pretty much what you said only with an inner demon =P

I agree somewhat with everyone, but I believe that the song is about a man who lost the love of his life to another man (I think a good friend) because if you read the last lines, it reads... "look at what you've done to me, you've become my enemy, poisoning my world for me, take away my everything. Weakened as I am" By seeing these lines I believe that a good friend advanced on this mans ex girlfriend, and when he found out he was completely devastated. That's just my take on it.

I agree with Chipmunk777 and a few others, but since I know how boring it could be to keep reading the same opinions on songs, heres my initial reaction upon reading the lyrics:

it is about someone (david) who got close to someone or something, and realized that they carried a lot of painful memories and thoughts wth them. David got close to this person, and absorbed their pain and negativity. This probably caused him to spiral downward with that person. Upon realizing what was taking place, David broke free of the torture and saw how much that person affected him.
