According to guitarist Dan Donegan, "It's about a girl he [vocalist David Draiman] was in a relationship with. She's committed suicide, and he just has the voice of the devil over his shoulder trying to provoke him to take his own life to join her again, because the only chance for him to be with her again is if he takes his life. We're not condoning suicide off of this, it's just more of the temptation to join a girlfriend that was very confused and messed up and wanted out."

nice job on the lyrics, but I think it is "who had been rendered unwhole" instead of "who had been rendered alone" that just sounds better to me, but I may be wrong.

My theory of what the song and lyrics mean; David(lead singer)is dating a durg addicted,suicidal girl named Devon, who then commits suicide.David goes to her apartment and finds her hung from the ceiling.Her soul is then stolen by the grim reaper and brought to hell(represented by the wordus"inside the fire", meaning in hell)David doesnt know what to do.The devil tells him that if he commits suicide he can join Devon.

and also, it sounds to me like instead of "you must surrender it all and give life to me again" he is saying "you must surrender it all, if youd like to meet agian". that just makes a little more sense to me, what do you guys think??

From what I heard in an interview, this song is about when David Draimen was 16 and his girlfriend at the time committed suicide. At his girlfriend's funeral, David Draimen said that he could here the devil speaking to him, encouraging him to commit suicide as well to be with his girlfriend (Devon) again. The lyrics are basically what the devil was saying to him.

This song is about how the devil calls you when you try to kill yourself

This song is by far one of my favorites in time I dont know. But when I listen to thing song..This is what i see::: (Really long, forgive me)

Indeed this song is about David's girlfriend committing suicide. She had a drug addiction and David had been trying to help her but it was to much on the both of them so he ended the relationship. She then killed herself and when he went to the funeral it was the first dead body he had seen in a casket. He then felt the devil trying to persuade him to kill himself and give him his soul so he could be with her. And that is pretty much the chorus. Even though this is a sensitive and sad song, it still rocks.

This song is fucking amazing!!! One of Disturbed's best. It is indeed about David Draiman's ex-girlfriend who committed suicide and this song is about how David wanted to take his own life to join her. New album will be sick!

I agree that it's about david's girlfriend killing herself and he's trying to decide if he should kill himself so he can be with her again.
