Therein Lyrics
Gentle storm | Thundering silence
Inferior force | Uncontrolled calm
Vital unlife | Logic/chaos/logic
The tone of which his birth ascend
The beat that of a heart descend
Repeating in the infinite
An insight made it clear
Order stormed the surface
Where chaos set the norm
Had there always been balance? Surely not
Therein lies the beauty
It was solid
Yet everchanging
It was different
Yet the same
So I starve myself for energy
It was solid
Yet everchanging
It was different
Yet the same
So I starve myself for energy
I starve myself for energy
The song around his soul will bend
The notes that in this hole will melt
Crawl out of science
A dreamland if you dare
Disorder clawed the boundaries
We're ordered to stand clear
Was it always different? Never the same?
Therein lies the beauty
It was solid
Yet everchanging
It was different
Yet the same
So I starve myself for energy
It was solid
Yet everchanging
It was different
Yet the same
So I starve myself for energy
I starve myself for energy
As there were no witnesses
There was nothing to be told
As nothing could be grasped
The story could unfold
Superimposed on the elements of anger
Fear, anxiety
Hate, despair, remorse
So break from all the fear holds fast
Exposed, now turn to all you lack
Let echoes be the answer
Return from all the screams
Wordless now, the last attack
So silent it hurts to listen
Was it always solid, to never change?
Therein lies the beauty
It was solid
Yet everchanging
It was different
Yet the same
So I starve myself for energy
It was solid
Yet everchanging
It was different
Yet the same
So I starve myself for energy
I starve myself for energy

Antique philosophy. To be exact, Heraclitus' philosophy. He said "Opposition brings concord. Out of discord comes the fairest harmony."
I KNEW philosophy class would be good for SOMETHING.
This song to me argues the constant battle between the religious and scientific point of view. It details the various perspectives of those of the religious faith against those of the evolution/scientifc side. The first three lines of the lyrics seem to suggest this diametric overview, with the rest of the body conveying the ever shifting quest for the meaning of "Where did we come from." We are a free card in the universe as it stands today.
The lyrics of the song “Therein” by Dark Tranquillity are about a person who is struggling with their own identity and emotions. They feel trapped in a cycle of pain and despair, and they long for a way out. They question their existence and their purpose, and they wonder if there is any meaning or hope in life. They also express a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time, when they were more innocent and happy. They realize that they have changed over time, and they are not sure if they like who they have become. They are searching for something that can fill the emptiness inside them, but they are not sure what it is or where to find it.
It about the world in constant motion and wonder if something does not change ie if something lasts forever. DT loves to put philosophy and science concepts in their songs.
I'm not claiming to be able to interpret this song, but i think the notion of order and chaos from a human point of view is important. The universe basically just exists, humans try to see things in it and also build from it, e.g. somewhat ordered societies. On different levels, i.e. throughout a lifetime, as well as through the history of mankind and also of the universe, once can see turmoil as well as stability. Science and art are means to look at it and express it, that's what humans do and that might be the source of the energy one starves oneself for.
"Therein lies the beauty" appears three times, always preceded by some part of the refrain: "Had there always been balance, surely not" "Was it always different, never the same" Was it always solid, never to change" That's a very clear hint towards change in general, an imbalance that strives to reach a state of harmony, yet never reaching it. A constant movement, that apparently is beautiful.
I agree with afflicted, but I think it also has a meaning. As in, it's not just some "paradoxed ironic mess";).
I think it could be something about how nothing is what it seems and how you have to have your own perceptions about things. (heh, I rhymed!)
I can't really find a meaning. It is a great song.
I think part of the problem could be it's a Swedish band writing in English which is the problem with Scandinavian metal bands. They conform to English and songwriting becomes much more difficult.
The song is about opposites. Acording to popular believes is the battle of opposites that sets the world in motion and therein lies the beauty.
Mikael sings clear vocals surprisingly well
I think this is a very controversial song/album for Dark Tranquillity. They seem to take it down a notch to a more melodic sound, with the softer lyrics of Mikael that add a sadness to each song. I think it's great that they decided to experiment with their sound but still returned to their amazing old sound in their post-Projector albums. CHANGE IS GOOD!
