In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
You know it when it's over
Door are closing feel the sober staring at you
You know you better take one more good look
One more round then it's bottles to the ground
Smashing of the glass what a super sonic sound
You gotta pull the plug when it's time to die
Whoa whoa whoa, bottles to the ground
There's a suitcase on the side walk
There's some records in a milk crate
She'll be staying
You'll be throwing whiskey over one lip
One more round then it's bottles to the ground
Smashing of the glass a perfect imperfect sound
You gotta pay the piper when the rats are gone
Whoa whoa whoa, bottles to the ground
One more round then it's bottles to the ground
One more round then it's bottles to the ground
One more round then it's bottles to the ground
One more round then it's bottles to the ground

I might be totally wrong here, but I think its just about getting drunk. I love Nofx, and their lyrics tend to be pretty much straightforward.
I have to agree to imp's "interpretation".

I think I've heard Fat Mike saying that at a Show...
Fat Mike probably did say that story about the Amsterdam bar but true, or not it doesn't make emmasue46's comment incorrect. I love the way Fat Mike writes & plays bass but let's face it. He's full of shit sometimes. The lyrics ARE pretty straight forward most of the time. It's when people read too much into them we start hearing about a guy giving up his whole family & suffering a horrible death. Now we've added to the story. None of that is in the song. This guy is in a bar until closing time having harmless conversations about pulling the plug with other drunks. He then stumbles home only to discover his lovely lady has discarded his shit on the sidewalk. We cut to the same guy in the same bar (or perhaps the bar in Amsterdam if that does it for you) throwing shots of whiskey over his bottom lip. Then, he pays his bartender for getting rid of the rats (helping him forget his troubles
