Even with a diagram of my DNA
I leave scientists baffled 'till the end of the day
Try to pick apart my life-style
How I survive making
Money for the boss while I make nickel and dime
Being on time takin' a punch and doin' my best
not ever hearing good job and staying upset
It doesn't take to much to find
The sediments they left behind.
Put down the book
Put up the walls
Never givin' up at all
What's yours is yours,
What's mine is yours and I'll mature.
Endure.
Not even with ten men holding me back
Not even with a devious planned attack
Contemplating every move that I play
Willing the bad things all away
Keeping the worry-free
Happiness philosophy
That's what I let them see
When they try to look at me.
Put down the book
Put up the walls
Never givin' up at all
What's yours is yours,
What's mine is yours and I'll mature.
Endure.
Don't want out.
These issues arise everyday,
Though you try to turn your head and walk away,
Though it leaves you feeling insecure
You're gonna feel your life mature.
Endure.

ELIAS is pointing out that we do what we have to, because we have to. It's not a matter of "do I want to?" it's a matter of "I have to.". I think that's what he means about maturing. As a kid, you bitch about homework, about your meanial job at McDonalds or whatever, but once you become an adult, you complain about that shit less, not because you like it any better, but because you've reached that understanding, that it's something you have to do in order to get by. The part about this is what they see when they try to look at me though, about his happy, worry free philosophy? I think that's another part of becoming an adult. You worry about bills, keeping food on the table, and it's a "crush everybody to get to the top" mentality, but when he used to walk into work, he didn't let his coleagues, or his boss see that that was something he worried about. So, I think those are the two issues in the song. My Dad knows that mentality all to well. He's a painter, paints interiors and exteriors, but when winter comes, most of his group gets laid off. In order for my Dad to make the cut, to keep from getting the temporary ax, he's gotta be the best, the fastest, hardest, strongest worker. Nevermind that he's 48 years old, and has Arthuritis. If he doesn't work like a dog, his family won't have food on the table. So, that's what I think Elias is saying. Sorry for the lengthy explanation. Lol.
this song is about fucking up somewhere in life and having to go through a tough phase to get back to where you want to be. the lines about making money for the boss, being on time, and taking a punch seem to refer to having to endure a sucky job and take punches to get ahead or stay abreast of the pack. the lines about "keeping the worry-free, happiness philosophy" let us know that he is hiding his discontent to reassure others that he has things under control in his life. on a personal note, the lines about putting down the books and putting up the walls almost exactly follow my pattern of behavior after getting kicked out of college. i had to put down the books and put up walls to defend myself from criticism and discontent.
one of their best tunes, i recommend it to anyone who has had a bad job or a realy tough period in their life that seems to stick with them.
definatly a great song
