The Gray Race Lyrics

The framework of the world
is black and white
The infrastructure builders
Flex their might

Turning true emotion
into digital expression
One by one we all fall down

The gray race shrivels
trapped inside the world it creates
it's black and white

The perpetual destructive
Motion machine
Began to chart a course
Never before seen

Turning raw compassion
into fields of plus and minus
One by one we all give in

The gray race shrivels
trapped inside the world it creates
it's black and white

I'd swear there were times when I was someone else
A person with determination and knowledge of the self
But you flattened me to rubble and now I can see that I'm
Just a faded negative of the image I used to be

And that's our dilemma

I don't think the "Gray Race" represents a lack of individuality here, or else the separation into "Black and White" would mean having a personality and that doesn't fit. I think we are the Gray Race, the most culturally and racially mixed that's ever been, and yet, we keep separating ourselves into opposite groups, "Blacks and Whites" despite how unfitting they are for a Gray Race, so we shrivel, trapped in these dichotomies we build.

This separation was already built into the framework of our world, but the builders of this infrastructure (government, leaders, CEOs) still flexed their might inserting this same framework on the, then new, internet. Raw emotion was lost in digitalization and compassion was lost in the chase of profits (the perpetual motion machine and "fields of plus and minus" must refer to economics, as computers work with fields of ones and zeros or booleans).

The building of these new structures crushes our sense of self into rubble and turns us into shadows, or faded negatives of who we were, but isn't the construction of the internet or new infrastructures, albeit imperfect, still progress? Should we stop progress if it divides us, or can the Gray Race even build anything without permeating it with a "them and us" mentality?

I think that's our dilemma.

I disagree. This song is about the modern world and how our society is increasingly void of true emotion and individuality. The "Gray Race" is an allusion to the fact that we are all the same formless beings created by society.

The dillema is that we use barriers to communicate (eg. computers instead of meeting in person) and we no longer value the individual or differences.

I agree with Jae D. This song is about computers, about how we are becoming more and more dependent on them, even for relationships. I think the gray race, is what we no longer are. The puritans believed there was no gray, you were one way or the other, he is saying we are returning to those beliefs, with no gray area in between, no individuality.

the "gray race" refers to the fact that humans have the ability to see shades of gray, not just black and white. despite this ability, we have created a society that encourages "black and white" thinking and behavior. however, we betray our species by doing so, because the world is actually more complex than this. Hence: The gray race shrivels trapped inside The world it creates is black and white.

saying we're all the same peopls...no black, white, pink, purple whatever.....just gray

we shouldnt have people suffer for differences they should be praised for there differences it would be boring if everyone was just gray

gofuckyourself, I don't see how you can hold those views and agree with Jae D at the same time....

Gray doesn't represent individuality here, it represents the lack thereof.

jaed and modern man are precise.

I think its about the minority people of the modern world who are brought up face the realization(as in this song) that their basically just cought in a gray area

that being just who they are, on the whole.

turning true emotion to digital expression depicts something like the eifell Tower.. or the statue of liberty. the portrayed vision of their constructors.

turning raw emotion to fields of plus and minus are depicting the raw emotion of ourselves consciously deduced down into numbers, factory precison.

and the people just born, cought in the middle of all this and dont really dont see the significance of this affliction, and are kindof lost.

i think greg is expressing himself clearly as his personal views, and its also depicted on the album cover

rpgaction is the only one who got it right. also I agree with him: gofuckyourselves, and while you're at it check out http://www.infowars.com might help you get a clue.

@bloodomen LOL this comment doesn't hold up well... imagine associating infowars with "getting a clue"...
