The sea, it swells like a sore head
And the night, it is aching
Two lovers lie with no sheets on their bed
And the day, it is breaking

On rainy days we go swimming out
On rainy days swimming in the sound
On rainy days we go swimming out

You're in my mind all of the time
I know that's not enough
If the sky can crack, there must be some way back
For love and only love

Car alarm won't let you back to sleep
You're kept awake dreaming someone else's dream
Coffee is cold, but it'll get you through
Compromise, that's nothing new to you

Let's see colors that have never been seen
Let's go to places no one else has been

You're in my mind all of the time
I know that's not enough
Well, if the sky can crack, there must be some way back
To love and only love

Electrical storm
Electrical storm
Electrical storm
Baby, don't cry

It's hot as hell, honey, in this room
Sure hope the weather will break soon
The air is heavy, heavy as a truck
We need the rain to wash away our bad luck

Hey
Hey

Well, if the sky can crack, there must be some way back
For love and only love

Electrical storm
Electrical storm
Electrical storm

Baby, don't cry
Baby, don't cry
Baby, don't cry
Baby, don't cry

Hey, I actually have heard this song! A radio station in my state actually has a copy of it. Let me just let you guys know, it's a good tune. As for the meaning, I think it's about a couple whom have either broken up, or aren't on speaking terms, or whom are far away from each other. One of them is reflecting upon it and is hoping for a new day, for the bad luck to just wash away. Perhaps Bono or Edge wrote it about thier relationships...that's only a possibly...

I read on the official site what Bono said about this song, he says that it's about a couple sitting in a room and that the pressure of their relationship can be felt in the air. He was also talking about drawing inspiration from September 11. An awesome song and a great new single.

Not Bono's marriage, as the have been together for a while.

My take is that Bono is explaining the feeling of limbo, listlessness, and being lost after an emotional or physical strain (e.g. major accident, break-up, decision to move). Kind of like the post-traumatic stress one feels and trying to explain it to someone who wasn't affected. However, specifically, Bono does seem to single out interpersonal relationships explicitly.

    Peace

    Question

Stupid question, but when he talks about swimming in the sound, you you think he's meaning a body of water, or metaphorically swimming in audible sound....of the rain?? I always hated this part in high school literature assignements, trying to figure out what the writer was trying to convey or figuring out the meaning behind the words. I sucked at it.

    My Interpretation

I'm going to disagree with most people here but I don't think it's about a couple having problems with each other. I think it's about a couple who doesn't have much money and can't afford many things or to go out for dinners, but they have good love and sex lives with each other that keeps them going.

They both work dead-end jobs, probably for minimum wage for a company that exploits them (kept awake dreaming someone else's dream). They're used to hard lives (compromise, that's nothing new to you) and are okay for the time being as long as they have each other. I think the "no sheets" line is actually suggesting sex, meaning that the bed is dishevelled after their night. Now they're watching the sun come up and holding each other before they get ready for work.

However, electrical storms happen when it's been warm and humid for a while, which I think is a metaphor for their financial situation. They're getting by, but things can't continue like this forever. They need the "rain" to wash away their "bad luck" financially. Even though they have financial challenges, their love still keeps them going through them.

To tell you the truth, I haven't quite worked the meaning out yet, I just think it's an excellent tune. Not quite a U2 classic, but hey, it's better than anyone else could do! :p

This is a great song. While it is not up there with some of the U2 classics from the 80's, I think it's right below them.
