The Waiter Lyrics
in a cabin out where it's cold
there's a waiter serving time
he remembers she said
"I'll be there yes I'll be there
someday when the snow thaws"
so he stands watching the snow fall
in his hand a clock on a platter
he remembers she said
"I'll be there yes I'll be there
every night your eyes dream"
"dream dream my lonely one"
there's a waiter serving time
he remembers she said
"I'll be there yes I'll be there
someday when the snow thaws"
so he stands watching the snow fall
in his hand a clock on a platter
he remembers she said
"I'll be there yes I'll be there
every night your eyes dream"
"dream dream my lonely one"

Made me think of the nabokov short story "A Matter of Chance". An emigre waiter working in a train is separated from his wife for years, becomes addicted to cocaine and decides to commit suicide by putting his head between the buffers of two train carriages. His wife happens to be in close proximity on the same train, but neither have any idea of the other's presence and the act goes ahead. Just a personal association.
the saddest song of all the world
