In the Meantime Lyrics
Earth tone suits you
So give it a smile
If I could hold your feet down
Get to know for a while
To make due is a promise
Hard to keep without help
Never taught to look in
I'm too concerned with my health
Help spread right, ash is
Cow-fertilized
Come down in a feed town
Strength to minimize
Hold it
In the meantime
So give it a smile
If I could hold your feet down
Get to know for a while
Hard to keep without help
Never taught to look in
I'm too concerned with my health
Cow-fertilized
Come down in a feed town
Strength to minimize

I think this song is about being kept down by a system the puts you in a certain place. With time passing by, you will not think about the deficiencies of the system as such, but you are concerned about your job in fulfilling the expectations of others. The last part
Help me spread right, ash is Cow-fertilized Come down in a feed town Strength to minimize
seems to me about resignation. You see the system, but you can not fight against it. All you do is in the same direction as the others that can't see. You keep your frustration to yourself.
I don't know if the lyrics mean anything, but what you're talking about sounds like what I hear in the tone and structure of the song, especially the resignation. neat.

@ukirsche Given the lyricist grew up in a small 'redneck' midwestern town it makes sense it would have an air of resignation to it. The late 80's were the beginning of a long, slow slide to US mediocrity.

The lyrics have little meaning. This is just vintage Helmet - heavy and uncompromising.
I had this blaring while packing up to evacuate from a hurricane (which didn't hit where I was after all), and then in the car as I got in the parking lot that is normally a highway. The track just sounds like impending doom and destruction.
PS-"Help spread right" is actually "Help me spread right, ash is..."
i can't help but think this is about someone being raped or just sex
Earth tone suits you So give it a smile
If I could hold your feet down Get to know for a while
-I'm thinking this girl is down to earth and all and Page is thinking of getting her in bed (if i could hold your feet down...know for a while)
To make due is a promise Hard to keep without help Never taught to look in I'm too concerned with my health
-the girl must be virgin and to make due (lose it) takes 2 people (hard to keep w/o help). the guy isn't into diving in with emotion, he's just wanting it for the hell of it (never taught to look in...concerned with my health)
Help me spread right, ash is Cow-fertilized Come down in a feed town Strength to minimize
-This part I get lost at though. The only thing I can imagine is that the girl ends up getting pregnant (spread right ash is...cow fertilized)
Hold it
In the meantime
-my 2 cents. Not really sure but I love this song. This song brought me into Helmet and is one of my favorites for sure.
I think it's about people who are too concerned with death. In the meantime live your fucking life!
"Earth tone suits you So give it a smile If I could hold your feet down Get to know for awhile" .........(the earth is being inviting to man giving a promise of peace and silence.)
"To make due is a promise Hard to keep without help Never taught to look in I'm too concerned with my health"........ (the man is having second thoughts about living and running out of reasons to live yet concerned with doubt and fear from the thought of death.")
"Help me spread right, ash is Cow fertilized Come down in a feed town Strength to minimize
Hold it
In the meantime".........(the earth is giving man a noble reason for his death. but everything still on hold.)
