I'm tired from exploring you
I'm sorry you've had some scary days
I'm lucky, they had me on a leash
Exposing, sometimes you frighten me
And it's too bad you're so sad
I wish you could have had what I had
I'm loathing most of your history
Hesitation, but then you siphon me
Your potential, well I'll indulge in that
Violent timing explains the aftermath
And it's too bad you're so sad
I wish you could have had what I had
And it's so sad, it's too bad
Maybe I can make you feel better
Oh maybe I'm supposed to make you feel better
I want to comfort you
Unlike you I had it easy
You're dark blue
Stained from previous days
And you're so sad
It's too bad
I wish you could have had what I had
And it's too bad you're so sad
Maybe I can make you feel better
I'm sorry
I'm sorry you've had some scary days
I'm lucky, they had me on a leash
Exposing, sometimes you frighten me
I wish you could have had what I had
Hesitation, but then you siphon me

I wish you could have had what I had
And it's so sad, it's too bad
Maybe I can make you feel better
Oh maybe I'm supposed to make you feel better
You're dark blue
Stained from previous days
It's too bad
I wish you could have had what I had
And it's too bad you're so sad
Maybe I can make you feel better
I'm sorry

Just want to make a slight correction to some comments. This song is over 13 years old. It's not about Gavin Rossdale. It is about Tony Kenan of no doubt her band before she went solo. She was madly in love with him but he didnt reciprocate that love.
Wow, I really never saw this song the way other people see it. I had such a clear interpretation of it, so it's interesting to see all these perspectives.
That being said, I strongly feel it's not about a friendship. It's about a relationship. It's about growing apart from your lover, but still WANTING to be in love with them, but realizing that the love is gone. She said "It's too bad you're so sad, I wish you could have had what I had.." This, to me, means that Gwen was happy in the relationship. She wishes that her lover saw their relationship SHE sees it; blissful, happy. But he could only see the bad, was complicated ("You've had some scary days" -- meaning this person battled some scary thoughts about Gwen, their relationship, etc.) and so forth. That's why Gwen apologizes at the end. The last line "I'm Sorry" is.... I mean... no words. A truly beautiful way to end the song. She wants her lover to know that she's sorry, and she hopes that they know it's not her fault that the love disappeared.
Sorry if that makes no sense. It makes too much sense to me. I can't see this song any other way. But everyone has their unique interpretation which gives the song a personal meaning to them.
I agree with you, and it makes perfect sence, that's what I think of it. "wish you could of had what I had" I think with that she means that she experienced and very happy real lively relationship before and that he hasn't , so basically he wont be able to see it how she sees it. and "your dark blue, stained from previous days" is that he was damaged and he was stained from it , so how I take it is that due to his damage that he cant let go."Hesitation, but then you siphon me" this basically...

I can relate to this song, cause I'm going through this now with my bf.
ahh i love this one, its such a moody song. i love it when gwen sings "unlike you... i had it easy. you're dark blue... stained from previous days" thats definitely my favorite part. yarr good stuff there my friends
I can relate. I had a best friend took a darker path in life, and it pains me to see it. I have a wonderful life, but she in in the grasp of drugs, sex and alcohol. She wasn't raised as strict as I was, so the line "I'm lucky, they had me on a leash" really hits home. Maybe if she had what I had growing up, she would be a better person.
this is the nicest song from no doubt. i especially like the piano part..[sighs]
i agree with honeybee. it's about someone who indulges in the bad things in life and the narrator of the song is pained by all that her friend is doing.
my favorite no doubt song. EVER. absolutely gorgeous. the piano part is so pretty it moves me to tears. especially that one repeated part of the "too late" tune. gorgeous lyrics. ahh i just can't say enough about this song. i love it. love love love it. =)
I'm tired from exploring you I'm sorry you've had some scary days She's been looking into the life of a close friend and she doesn't like what she sees. I'm lucky, they had me on a leash Exposing, sometimes you frighten me Her family gave her limits and boundaries of what she could do, so she barely ever did the wrong thing or got into a mess. But her friend is so vulnerable, unprotected, to the evils of the world that it's scary. And it's too bad you're so sad I wish you could have had what I had She feels really sorry for all her friend has gone through, and she wishes she could've had it as easy, as perfect, as her. Unlike you I had it easy You're dark blue Stained from previous days Her friend has had some rough times that have changed her..for the worst. She hasn't been the same, like herself, ever since.
I think it's about someone who was more than a friend, though it coulddddd be about a friend or more than a friend.
"I'm loathing most of your history Hesitation, but then you siphon me Your potential, well I'll indulge in that Violent timing explains the aftermath "
The whole violent timing line leads me to believe its about a love rather than a friend. I just think the connotation of "aftermath" is too strong to be just the end of a friendship...
To me this is about a relatonship, but I get where everyone is coming from. I've never looked at this song that way.
