"Wish You Were Here" as written by and Roger/gilmour Waters....
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
And how we found
The same old fears
Wish you were here

General CommentThe thing that makes this song so meaningful to everyone is that the lyrics are so ambiguous that they are open to endless interpretation. Sure, the song is about Syd, but that's what the song means to the band. The song can be compared to events in the lives of virtually everyone, unless you're living some ideallic, perfect life. We've all been lonely, we've all been confused, we've all made bad choices, etc., etc., this song is humanity's anthem.
