The Dolphin's Cry Lyrics
Life is like a shooting star It don't matter who you are If you only run for cover, it's just a waste of time We are lost 'til we are found This phoenix rises up from the ground And all these wars are over
To me that little section speaks volumes. To me its like saying that love happen to every one doesn't care who you are or what you have been through. Sometimes we arent ready for love when it happens, we get scared cold feet whatever and we run, some of us run a little harder then others. You can only run so far before it hits you sometimes its not to late to spark that fire back up and make mends of the pain we caused to each other and to ourselves.
I think this hits me hardest cause its so true, you cant stop love you can fight it but it will win in the end always has. I dont know how many countless times I have heard people say I dont deserve to be loved or something along them lines and it couldn't be farther from the truth.
But otherwise for the song as a whole I think Its about a couple who falls in love then go their seperate ways for whatever reason and meet each other later down the road only to rekindle what they had and realize that the time they were apart doesnt seem to mater now they are back together and they are able pick up right where they left off, very passionate lovers.
An absolutely amazing song fits me and my husband beyond perfectly. We married, we got scared and ran never filed for a divorce, finally one day I get a message he was filing the papers we started talken only to realize we couldnt do it everything was still there just as intense as it had been years ago, so we remained married, he is the love of my life and my soulmate!
Wow AMAZING story bunnie!

Excellent insight! Voted up! But don't be so self-confident: for all we know, your husband may be right now banging your neighbor...

It's a bit more then just sex on a beach. Or anywhere for that matter. It's about a couples spur of the moment love where they can barely control themselves. After it's all over they leave. Later they meet again in that same spot and it's like nothing else ever mattered. You can tell by when he says" time in between was just a dream." There is no actual fog. He's refering to the loss of control he has over himself. When he says " we are lost till we are found" I think he means, we are nothing until we have someone to love. In short it's like what the Beatles said: " All you need is love."
Where the heck is there a sex reference? I think some of you hear sex in every song...geesh. The song is about love and trust. I'm with Ventifact on this one. Incredible lyrics.
words cannot explain the way this song makes me feel!
hmm...call me crazy but I always got a love song vibe from this song.....just a thought. lol
Ed actually says in several interviews that it starts out about sex on the beach, then it grows into something more... It's the initial love for the person they're with, then being overcome by a feeling of total love and happiness... A state of total bliss, I'd dare to say Ed's perfect world in a way. Ed is a huge proponent of love, not so much the sex kind, but the "love thy neighbor" type. This song is just kinda about getting lost in a tide of love and feeling completely at peace with the world kinda thing.
After reading all these posts, I don’t know if I understand the song more or less now. LOL! If Ed says it’s about sex on the beach, then it’s about sex on the beach. But I think we all know better than to believe that’s ALL it’s about. Even sex can be used as a metaphor to mean something deeper – the bliss and passion he describes are feelings you can have about sex with the right person, but they are also feelings you can have about life and people and the world around you. If you tie in the line “if you only run for cover, it's just a waste of time” with the video symbolism of the water being a means of renewal or an awakening then you can apply that to life in that if you want to experience life to the fullest, with as much passion as possible and reach that bliss, then you have to face life head on and take what it gives you. You can’t hide from it because then you’re not living it. You know, the same applies to sex if you think about it. Go experience it and live it –have sex on the beach! Just take a blanket and watch out for that sand – they don’t call it sandpaper for nothing. ;-)
My favorite part of the video is after the first wave where the water calms down and everyone stops running and they all look around with relief, but Ed is there beckoning to the water with that wild look as if to say “just wait, it’s not over yet.” And then the big wave comes and even though everyone runs in fear “it’s just a waste of time” because they are overtaken by the wave anyway. In contrast, the band stays put and faces it head on and even though they are overcome by it they are able to get back up and keep going right away. But for the rest of the people, instead of getting up and going on about their business, they all look bewildered and stunned. So if they had stopped running and faced it head on, they would have recovered from it sooner. Life is like that. It’s better if you face your fears and all of life head on so you can see what’s coming at you. You might get knocked over, but you get back up, say “wooooo!” and keep going.
And that’s about as profound as I’m gonna get at 10:30 p.m. LOL!
the imagery in this song is absolutely amazing. the way i interpret this song is in somewhat of a spiritual aspect.
sure it has allusions to the whole 'sex on a beach' motif but on a deeper level there is such... intensity.
the whole time, the guy's trying to explain something. something that is indescribable. some may call it love. but every verse is just like a little attempt to even grasp at describing even a little part of it but its so strong and overwhelming he just feels helpless and can do nothing but give into it. there is a lot of references to being "helpless" and powerless. kind of similar to being in a state of mystical trance.
this song. just wow.
I've always thought this song was about norse or other ancient mythology. A male immortal talking to a Goddess such as Freya, who cried tears of gold searching for her lost husband. The imagery of the Phoenix and peace that comes over like a swoon. Love never dies.
@TheMOAK you are so close it's not even funny. After reading all these comments I'm gonna lay out everything and spread some sauce that's awesome, esoteric, folklore and what I believe is the true meaning that Ed keeps secret cause what he says in the interview is so cliche and ppl are willing to grab onto it and miss what's actually going on in his mind with this song... Best comment so far is this one tho. Great stuff!

Ed has been a new ager since the start. What I think here is that he is comparing the moment of enlightenment to having an orgasm. Once enlightened, one can hear things that one has never experienced before.
