After reading all these posts, I don’t know if I understand the song more or less now. LOL! If Ed says it’s about sex on the beach, then it’s about sex on the beach. But I think we all know better than to believe that’s ALL it’s about. Even sex can be used as a metaphor to mean something deeper – the bliss and passion he describes are feelings you can have about sex with the right person, but they are also feelings you can have about life and people and the world around you. If you tie in the line “if you only run for cover, it's just a waste of time” with the video symbolism of the water being a means of renewal or an awakening then you can apply that to life in that if you want to experience life to the fullest, with as much passion as possible and reach that bliss, then you have to face life head on and take what it gives you. You can’t hide from it because then you’re not living it. You know, the same applies to sex if you think about it. Go experience it and live it –have sex on the beach! Just take a blanket and watch out for that sand – they don’t call it sandpaper for nothing. ;-)

My favorite part of the video is after the first wave where the water calms down and everyone stops running and they all look around with relief, but Ed is there beckoning to the water with that wild look as if to say “just wait, it’s not over yet.” And then the big wave comes and even though everyone runs in fear “it’s just a waste of time” because they are overtaken by the wave anyway. In contrast, the band stays put and faces it head on and even though they are overcome by it they are able to get back up and keep going right away. But for the rest of the people, instead of getting up and going on about their business, they all look bewildered and stunned. So if they had stopped running and faced it head on, they would have recovered from it sooner. Life is like that. It’s better if you face your fears and all of life head on so you can see what’s coming at you. You might get knocked over, but you get back up, say “wooooo!” and keep going.

And that’s about as profound as I’m gonna get at 10:30 p.m. LOL!
