I've always thought this song was about norse or other ancient mythology. A male immortal talking to a Goddess such as Freya, who cried tears of gold searching for her lost husband. The imagery of the Phoenix and peace that comes over like a swoon. Love never dies.

After reading all these comments I'm gonna lay out everything and spread some sauce that's awesome, esoteric, folklore and what I believe is the true meaning that Ed keeps secret cause what he says in the interview is so cliche and ppl are willing to grab onto it and miss what's actually going on in his mind with this song...
