The guy Ben's targeting in this song isn't your run-of-the-mill "alpha male," as the previous comments imply. Rather, he's a guy who tries to be "everything to everyone" – both the macho alpha (sports) and the sensitive beta (wine).

I def agree with Eamon in that Ben's not talking about the typical jock/party guy. I feel like he's refering to guys who put on a huge act to impress girls, whether they go the super-macho route or the sensitive-poet route.

Sports + wine = the complete prepster renaissance man, the guy who will steal your girl by combining machismo with faux sensitivity.

Yeah, I agree, this song is about those meat-headed guys who seem to have it all and don't deserve it (and thus don't appreciate it). Everything is either a fun game or a celebration. The rest of us can't ever understand what it's like to grow up like that, and they can't imagine what it was like to grow up like we did.

I thought it was talking about one of those stuck up artists who think they're so high class, talking about wine and sensitivity, but I guess I don't know how to back up the "sports" thing..

well if he is talking about the assholes in high school i can relate, if he's talking about the guys who pretend to be sensitive or super macho it doesnt matter i think this song really speaks strongly to us who have to deal with those morons

I think this song is more nuanced than just being a criticism of meat-headed alpha males, I really appreciate your insights. It's kind of tragic that people can't understand each other, don't you think? Although I think Ben is criticizing the kind of guy who deals with this by being fliexible, the deeper tragedy is that we just can't seem to simply tolerate each other. Who cares if you're a macho alpha into sports (and beer), or a sensitive guy who likes poetry and can relate to the more emotionally complex realm more easily inhabited by women? We should all just live and let live. In a way, I think Ben might be putting on a bit of the snarkiness in this song - in other words, he is subtly making fun of himself for the contradiction inherent in criticizing someone into both sports and wine when in reality he is actually a very tolerant guy who can only not tolerate the intolerant. I appreciate such complexity in his attitude and lyrics. He's a genius.
