I don't think this song is about WW1, nor the Gulf War. I think it's about WW2. They make a referenece to the Rhine river in Germany. The song also has a WW2 feel to it with the lyrics on "strafing air blood raid" and war crimes, and the whole supreme art of strategy thing.

I like the lin 'Sport the war, war support'. I think it's talking about how war has almost become a popular gameshow in recent years. After the Gulf War people want to sit down and be entertained by the war on TV, we've seen this throughout the 90's and post 2000.
plus the scorched earth policy was developed by the Germans/Nazis in ww2 and "encircle the front lines" was Hitler's strategy to come at them from all sides and take out the front force then spread out from there.......fyi

Pretty obvious that this isn't specifically referring to any real war. It is taking elements from both World Wars, taking a very slight German perspective (talking about the Rhine River, which runs along the Franco-German border, a heavy German military area) and discussing an event where this essentially 'made-up' war becomes a public sensation through the use of propaganda. Very much like BOTH World Wars, but not enough specific information (mixed in with some random shit) to really be talking about either of them.

It sounds reminscent of the mentality about war that existed up until after World War I; that war is a game and something that is good. The war tactics and technology in this sound like something from one of the World Wars; battles of attrition were especially common in WWI.
The last Slayer classic, and probably the best song post Reign In Blood. Love the guitar intro, then Dave's awesome drumming, he is the man, Bostaph can't hold a candle to him, so glad hes back and cant wait for their new album and tour!!!!!
