Underground Lyrics

I was never cool in school
I'm sure you don't remember me
And now it's been 10 years
I'm still wondering who to be
But I'd love to mix
In circles, cliques, and social coteries - that's me
Hand me my nose ring (Can we be happy?)
Show me the mosh pit (Can we be happy?)
We can be happy underground

Who's got the looks, who's got the brains
Who's got everything
I got this pain in my heart, that's all
Hey you with the long and lonely face
There's got to be something else
Let me tell ya something else
There was this girl who passed me by
She gave a smile but I was shy
I looked down, so down
Don't look there no no, go go underground
But now there's a place to go
It's the morning, it's the evening
It's everything
I click my heels and I'm there

Underground, underground
Everything's happy underground
You been kicked around
Did life bring you down here
Everything's heavy underground

We'll be decked in all black and
Slamming the pit fantastic
Officer Friendly's little boy's got a mohawk
He knows just where we're coming from
It's industrial, work it underground
Get down, get down, get down

Underground, underground
Everything's happy underground
You been kicked around
Did life bring you down here
Everything's heavy underground

I love the way the guy says, "Hand me my nosering!" Like he's talking to his harem of concubines while they're hand-feeding him grapes. Anybody know who that guy is, at the beginning? Is that just Ben talking in a funny voice?

That is Darren Jessee, the drummer. And LOL that is a perfect explanation of how he is saying that!! hahaha

The song is basically about how if you don't fit in, you just need to slap on some combat boots, heavy eyeliner, and a nose ring and now you're apart of the underground where you are accepted.

The song is very musical-esque. I just picture these little Hot Topic shoppers bursting into song. :)

I must say the best part of the song is the "It's industrial..." then the chink of hitting steel. I laugh so hard whenever i hear that

YES!! You wrote this almost 5 years ago and you'll never read this but I LOVE that part! I just thinking about it recently and how clever these guys were....sneakin stuff like that in, wuhaha.

This is from http://info.benfolds.org/UndergroundMeaning

"The 'Underground' thing is just an observation that if you don't have any friends and you're kind of a geek, there's something you can do about it. You can just put a nose ring in and you have instant friends. It's its own culture. There are rules to the subculture and alternative cultures, and if you abide by them, they'll let you in. It's a good thing. When the rock scene was so fucking serious-it's not quite that way anymore, but when it was-I just felt it was fun to make the little punk kids dance and smile. It was a fun thing. It's a very unbitter song."

"will be decked in all black, slamming the big fantastic"

For the longest time I thought that is what he said, and I never knew what the f#ck the big fantastic was.

They kick major ass. ;)

I love the live version of this song.. It's hysterical, when Ben sings, "I'm sure you dont remember me..". and some guy in the crowd goes, "Who the fuck are you?!"

Too funny.
