I agree with neko-chan- i think what they were trying to get across is that love is electric, when he was growing up he lived by a hydro-electric dam, he loved the feeling of the electricity running through his yard, now he has found someone that gives him that same feeling. They have that electricity that makes him feel good, chemistry, love and passion. Love is often described as a spark, when you kiss the person you are meant to be with forever, you feel a spark. The song is saying that there is enough electricty between them that they don't need anything else, that he would give anything for her to feel it too.
My boyfriend sent me this song, he is living in another state going to school currently and to me it means he would give anything to be with me. I cried when when i heard it for the first time, he made me feel so special and so loved, it was like he was saying that i light up his life, he would give anything to have me there with him.
I love this song so much, but I've had a newer thought come to me lately when listening to it.
Obviously I agree it's about looking at the "bright side" (heh) of every given situation.
But stretching it all just a bit, I can see even a little more - the speaker accepting the situation he's been given and not just "taking it lightly" but making light from it. Creating something beautiful from dangerous and maybe even deadly circumstances. Kinda like, "I'm gonna shine, and I'm gonna shine BRIGHTLY, even if it kills me".
This is SUCH a sweet, pretty song. I could be totally wrong, but I think it's about loving someone so much that it makes you look at everything differently. All these small things you took for granted seem beautiful when they're around. Reminds me of someone...=)

Ed was once watching a television report about this place was about a place that was so charged with electricity that the reporter "put a spare bulb in her hand and lit up the yard."
He thought, "who the heck would live there?" until he realized HE lived there. I think the song is about how no matter how crappy your home is, you love it because it's a part of you.
The industrial and urban waste tones that come through in this song- the field full of tires, the shopping cart in the ravine, the hydro electric dam, as well as the unspoken image of rows and rows of electrical wire towers spanning the landscape- all feed into this "no place like home" ideal. The home environment doesn't seem ideal from the outside, but from the point of the narrator therer is no place like it.
The song is not about a hydro-electric dam... that's a misunderstanding of a Canadian term. In Canadian English, "hydro" can refer to any type of electricity (probably because that's the main power source I guess). A "hydrofield" is just what Americans would call power lines, the big kind that you see cutting straight through a forest where the trees are cleared around them. So he's saying his neighborhood is divided by this type of power line and he can feel the electricity flowing through him from the lines.

I agree. It's like now that they have found something special, everything just lights up. Even the darkest hour, or the darkest room.
One of my favorite songs. I always thought it was about just because you don't have a lot of luxuries in your life doesn't mean you can't be happy with the ones you love. I guess that's pretty much the same.
