This is the perfect song to setup Everlong, it just makes Everlong sound even prettier and heartbreaking.
I think this song is about that his girl that he loved just dumped him and he's just really down in the dumps to the point where he just feels like he's only hanging on by a thread. He wants to be hopeful with the whole 'temporary scars' thing, saying he won't be feeling like shit forever, but he's still pretty sad. Poor guy :(
