February Stars Lyrics

Hangin' on here until I'm gone
Right where I belong just hangin' on
Even though, watched you come and go
How was I to know you'd steal the show?
One day I'll have enough to gamble
I'll wait to hear your final call bet it all
Hangin' on here until I'm gone
Right where I belong, just hangin' on
Even though, pass this time alone
Somewhere so unknown, it heals the soul
You ask for walls, I'll build them higher
We'll lie in shadows of them all
I'd stand, but they're much to tall
And I fall
February stars re floating in the dark
Temporary scars
February stars
February stars floating in the dark
Temporary scars
February stars
February stars floating in the dark
Temporary scars
February stars

With this song, I picture a person in the middle of field in the middle of no where laying on the hood of their car all alone staring up at the stars on a cold and clear February night. They are reflecting on a close friendship with someone over time where they developed romantic feelings for the other person that were not reciprocated:

"hanging on here until I'm gone I'm right where I belong just hanging on even know I watched you come and go how was I to know you'd steal the show?"

In this verse what is being said is "we have been good friends forever, I have developed feelings beyond just friendship".

"one day I'll have enough to gamble I'll wait to hear your final call and bet it all"

Here he is waiting to build up enough courage to tell her how he feels and see if she feels the same way. Bet is all is a reference to the value of their friendship and his feelings. He could ruin both by telling her.

"I'm hanging on here until I'm gone right where I belong just hanging on even know I pass this time alone somewhere so unknown it heals the soul"

This really paints a picture of someone just staring into the sky reflecting on their feelings. "Hanging on" represents time passing, day by day, week by week, month by month.

"you ask for walls I'll build them higher we'll lie in the shadows of them all I'd stand but they're much to tall and I fall"

Here walls represent the boundaries of friendship. He builds these walls higher as he enjoys their friendship and spending time with her, but he has built the walls so tall he will never be able to get over them to something more than friendship, so he gives up and and comes to accept that friendship is the only thing this relationship will ever be.

"February stars Floating in the dark Temporary scars February stars..."

The final words and instrumentals of this song really represent the bittersweet feelings one can have when they come to a moment of truth. In this case it is that their friendship will always be something special, but it will only be a friendship. Now, all alone in a field in the middle of no where, a man lays staring at the stars and the blackness of space and comes to terms with his feelings.

As so many people have stated above, this is about the last stages of a relationship in which Dave has become a spectator and is trying to hold onto for as long as possible. Because he's been involved in a number of separations (his parents, his wife, Kurt), I think this song is about the common characteristics of a disolving relationship rather than an isolated incident so I can see why so many people have posted about their take on the lyrics.

According to Dave (god), this song is about holding on by the tips of your fingers and hoping you don't slip and fall. And that's what it means to me. It's about holding on for dear life, about fragility, and about trying your hardest to make everything work. The music in this song is simply amazing. The dynamics of the way it builds, and then explodes in a climax at the end is a work of pure genius.

This song inflicts exposures burnt in my mind. I love it--for some reason I always think about sitting on top of the hood of some car, while staring at the stars. As the song speeds up, a meteor shower begins. Beautiful.

Such a wonderful song, this one. Foo Fighters are awesome!

I think this song in particular has something to do with a relationship that is dwindling away... He's trying to hold onto it but his grip is slipping and it's falling away and out of touch... Really sad, and the worst thing is it's not uncommon for most people to experience something like this...You feel like you belong somewhere, or with someone, but you're slowly coming to the conclusion that it just won't last forever. It's a 'coming to terms with' sort of song.

My opinion, anyway, awesome frickin's song!

it sounds like someone needing time just to be, to think through whatever has happened before moving on but knowing + accepting that in a strange kind of way ...or that's maybe how it feels, not wanting to speculate too much on the deeper background...
