Drifting
On a sea of forgotten teardrops
On a lifeboat
Sailing for
Your love
Sailing home

On a sea of old heartbreaks
On a lifeboat
Sailing for
Your love
Sailing home
On a sea of forgotten teardrops
On a lifeboat
Sailing for
Your love
On a sea of old heartbreaks
On a lifeboat
Sailing for
Your love
Sailing home

Incredibly beautiful and tender song. You could hear the tears in Jimi's throat as he sings it.
Agreed. I think he doesn't have anyone to love but the drifiting is metaphor for the "in and out of love" he has experienced. Perhaps it is really is about acid.
I think it's about Jimi's suspicion that there's something more to life than death and taxes and all the crap the majority of people worship.
There's something out there, but he doesn't exactly know how to get to it...that's why he's drifting.
This song is clearly about love, and what a fine way to say it. This is probably one of Jimi's shortest songs lyrically, but definitely among his other beautiful ballads like "One Rainy Wish", "May This Be Love" and "Angel". Proves that so much can be said in so little.
seriously dcat does every hendrix song have to be about an acd trip? im so sick of hearing that in every single thread abou jimi hendrix songs
forget all the looking for metaphors, just read the words as they are, he been through a million woman but one remains in his heart, also , at 2:22, that feedback that comes in , my fav part, its Cosmic, its beautiful, it hurts wonderfully...
My favourite Hendrix song. Of all time. My god, I love this song so much...
@garedelyon I couldn't agree more. It's a stunning and remarkable song. I only recently discovered it when I ordered 'The Cry Of Love'. An amazing record, and way underrated, but 'Drifting' is in a class unto itself. It's otherworldly in its beauty. I can't listen to it enough times. I don't think I could EVER get tired of it. It's not possible. Your comment really hit the nail on the head.

This song, I imagine, could have been written about Apollo 13. Look at the lyrics-
Drifting On a sea of forgotten teardrops On a lifeboat Sailing for Your love
Sailing home
Drifting On a sea of old heartbreaks On a lifeboat Sailing for Your love Sailing home
It was 1970, less than six months before Jimi died. He loved the space program, science fiction, technology, etc.
Was this song his artistic expression of what it would have been like to be in such a predicament? We'll never know for sure but to me, this is how I think he tried to relate to it.
Beautiful, just beautiful.
Hello ,i think simple this song IS for his mother.
