With regards to this entry, you might like "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death" by W.B. Yeats.

Arctic Monkeys – Riot Van Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song. It seems kinda sad though.

Like... a snapshot of one of the less-than peachy aspects of the relationship between young people and the cops, which is sad, cos like... you're meant to be able to trust cops/think they're cool, but that doesn't ever really happen in real life. Not when pc plod can pull out a truncheon on ya.

I dunno. This song just feels like it perfectly illustrates the sort of thing sooo many people I know go through all the time. I don't trust cops at all. I've been brought up to think of them kind of as bad guys... anywho, the Arctic Monkeys are soooo amazing. Brit Rock is alive and well :)

Has anyone else heard the acoustic version of this song? I love it. I love both versions, & like, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is my absolute favourite Bowie album, but you should check out the acoustic version too :)

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – 1983 ... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) Lyrics 17 years ago
I heard this song when I was 13 and it rocked my world. This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life.

I find Hendrix songs waaay difficult to analyse because a)I get so distracted by their awesomeness, b)the zeitgeist was so... everywhere, when he was alive and writing, so historical/cultural context is hard to pin and c)lest we forget the acid...

I agree with so many of the comments in this thread - even when those involved are/were flat out arguing with each other hehe...

Damian Marley – Welcome to Jamrock Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah Jamaica has been suffering from HUGE gang problems for years (even his dad wrote Burnin and Lootin after a home invasion). In this song Damian speaks out against that. Hella passionately.

What I find like, most moving is the bit at the very end when it goes into the "Jamaica" part. It's like a lament.

MGMT – Indie Rokkers Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that... I dunno, that he like wants to love her, but that he's afraid in case she doesn't love him back, and so he's sticking to the physical. And cos of the "You won't know the truth" thing which... might mean that she's trying to leave it as just a physical thing too.

Either way, I love this song :D I've been playing it all the time atm. I love limewire...

What does the Jung reference mean? Does anyone get it?

I mean, I get who it's about, but not why.

Nothing profound to say, (like, at all)

But just the way he sings the last verse? Sends a shiver up my spine every time I hear it. The classical guitar and the energy and then the silence... it's an amazing piece of music.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Porcelain Lyrics 17 years ago
It's so pretty. One of my fav rhcp songs, because of the fact that it's so gentle. Yeah, they can rock, but the fact that they can write songs like this too...

is awesome.

As to meaning?

Hmm... there's the whole alcoholic mum he met in rehab thing, aye.

But like... iuno, I've always thought of it as like... a girl who's had a baby, and then got post-natal depression. So she's like... disconnected from "the love of her kin" and "can't bear to share with her child" and is wasting away from the despair she's experiencing.

It's so sad, but really really pretty at the same time. And the fact that it sounds like a lullabie sorta ties in with the whole mother-child thing, aye...

But, y'know, this is just my interpretation...

Interpol – Rest My Chemistry Lyrics 17 years ago
That first verse seems to me as if he’s withdrawing, and the reason he’s doing so is because he wants to get clean, and this might in part be motivated by some girl he’s met, who’s young and innocent and pure, and has never been touched by the seediness of the druggie world (until she met him, at least) and is trying to save him, perhaps.

I think that the second verse is him reflecting on the way he’s lived his life, and that this is where his personal motivation for getting clean could come from, not wanting to numb out the world anymore, the way he has been (and the way drugs do. Sure, you experience things incredibly intense or whatever, but you stop feeling and functioning in the real world.) and

“Those days in the sun” could perhaps refer to either time he’s spent with pure-chick, or the time before he got into junk, and the way he wants to be again. Happy. Feeling. Living.

The repetition of the “Rest my chemistry” at the end of the verses, could, imo, be because their meaning changes. Sometimes it could mean that he’s resting his body from the drugs, and other times he’s resting his withdrawal by using again. Maybe at first he means it like the first meaning, but then, somehow, it ends up turning into the second meaning (or something like that) and maybe the girl walks in and finds him stoned again some time, and she, having not used herself, is totally shattered by the fact that he gave into the drugs again.

And he can’t explain it to her, his addiction, because she’s never been there, or felt it, and so all he says, helplessly, is that she’s so young/etc. The surprise could be because she thought that his resolution to give up had been totally unbreakable, and seeing him use again had been a shock to her system in a big way, because she's a bit naive.

The next verse (thought about really superficially (so not much at all :P)) could be that he goes to rehab (Recline in the faraway) and goes through all their processes and maybe even comes back clean and cured and whatnot.

But then, at the end, he uses again, and this time, although the girl knows about everything (and maybe even expected him to use again, this time around), he still wants to see her as being this beautiful innocent creature, because having exposed her to the seedy druggie world makes him feel terrible. So he promises to get clean again.

Over and over and over again.

So that the promise loses all it’s potency/meaning/etc.

That’s a rather cynical interpretation, but… yeah. That’s *my* meaning of the song.

And no less beautiful for it.

The song, I mean ;)
