Are You Experienced? Lyrics

If you can just get your mind together
uh-then come on across to me
We'll hold hands and then we'll watch the sunrise
From the bottom of the sea
But first, are you experienced?
Uh-have you ever been experienced-uh?
Well, I have
(Well) I know, I know, you'll probably scream and cry
that your little world won't let you go
But who in your measly little world, (-uh)
are you tryin' to prove to that you're
made out of gold and-uh, can't be sold
So-uh, are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced? (-uh)
Well, I have
Uh, let me prove it to you, yeah
Trumpets and violins I can-uh, hear in the distance
I think they're callin' our name
Maybe now you can't hear them,
but you will, ha-ha, if you just
take hold of my hand
Ohhh, but are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful

You can find a lot of ways that this song looks like its about acid but I really don't think it is...I don't have a source but I read this a while ago. The song is about open mindedness and outlook on life in general. It's about being able to look at things from every perspective.

"(Well) I know, I know, you'll probably scream and cry that your little world won't let you go But who in your measly little world, (-uh) are you tryin' to prove to that you're made out of gold and-uh, can't be sold

That's Jimi saying let go, stop living in "your little world" and be mentally freed.

The main reason I think this is because of the line "Not necessarily stoned but beautiful." He's basically saying "I'm not necessarily talking about drugs, I'm just talking about seeing things in a different light and learning through experience rather than thinking about everything as preconcieved notions that you've already made your mind up about."

Just how I look at it, who knows

i think this is about hendrix trying to get a girl he loves to drop acid with him. especially the parts about her world not letting her go is a psychedelic reference. letting go of your ego is pretty much the cornerstone of every psychedelic trip, at least the first one. it is meant to be more about freeing the girl he loves than just a song about acid. a lot easier to understand and appreciate if youve ever had a psychedelic experience, not that you need to be experienced to enjoy this.

the last line is probably my favorite quote from any song ever.

This song is beautiful just in the musicianship. Jimi had bigger plans towards the end of his life than just playing guitar. He was even in the process of forming an orchestra before his untimely death in 1970. This is part of that experimentation but amazingly early on.

Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful

God, how I love that line...

Yes, it can be interpreted as reffering to sex, drugs and rock and roll, but I think that is only half of the meaning... I think Jimi is talking about spiritual enlightenment in this song...

I actually thought this had a religious meaning. Jimi was a pretty religious man, despite his drug abuse.

My Interpretation

I wouldn't say religious...more like...spiritual.

Psychic TV covered this song with a child doing the vocals. It's interesting that they paired innocence with experience like that.
