Murders In The Rue Morgue Lyrics
I remember it as plain as day
although it happened in the dark of the night.
I was strolling through the streets of Paris
and it was cold it was starting to rain.
And then I heard a piercing scream
and I rushed to the scene of the crime
but all I found was the butchered remains
of two girls lay side by side.
Murders in the Rue Morgue
someone call the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
run before the killers go free
There's some people coming down the street
at last there's someone heard my call
I can't understand why they're pointing at me
I never done nothing at all.
But I must have got some blood on my hands
because everyone's shouting at me
I can't speak French so I couldn't explain
and like a fool I started running away.
Murders in the Rue Morgue
someone call the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
am I ever gonna be free.
And now I've gotta get away from the arms of the law.
All France is looking for me.
I've gotta find my way across the border for sure
down the south to Italy.
Murders in the Rue Morgue
someone call the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
I'm never going home.
Well I made it to the border at last
But I can't erase the scene from my mind
Anytime somebody stares at me, well
I just start running blind
Well I'm moving through the shadows at night
Away from the staring eyes
Any day they'll be looking for me
'Cause I know I show the signs of...
Murders in the Rue Morgue
running from the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
running from the arms of the law
Murders in the Rue Morgue
running from the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
am I ever gonna be free
It took so long and I'm getting so tired
I'm running out of places to hide
Should I return to the scene of the crime
Where the two young victims died
If I could go to somebody for help
It'd get me out of trouble for sure
But I know that it's on my mind
That my doctor said I've done it before.
Murders in the Rue Morgue
they're never gonna find me
Murders in the Rue Morgue
I'm never going home.

err, nope, yeah, it's inspired by the poe short story, but is not completely keeping with the story, in which 2 women were murdered, and an innocent was arrested, but an Orangutang (nt sure bout spelling) that had escaped from a sailor had killed them, sounds stupid, but honestly, I jus read it, it happened, dunno, looks like harris changed it to make better lyrics, coz maiden cant be doing with writing stories about chimps, can they? Maiden rule!
It is pretty much telling the story from the sailor whos monkey killed the girl's point of veiw. Harris dont mention the monkey but it could be implyed that the killer is an ourang outang and it wouldent contradict with the lyrics. It seems to be slightly tweaked but its not to far off from the real story I actualy just finished reading it 5 mins ago, its pretty good I recomend it, you cant go wrong with Edgar Allen Poe.
*SPOILER TO THE NOVEL BELOW***
Basicaly what happens in the book is a sailor captures a ourang outang (because there extramly valuable) in the jungle, and takes it to Paris to sell. The monkey escapes breaks into a house and violently kills 2 girls. The sailor sees the whole thing through the window and gets scared and runs away. The screams of the murder draw alot of attention, and the murders become a huge mystery in Paris. So 2 detectives are there trying to solve the crime and figure out that an ourang outang could of been the only thing that could of killed the girls in the way they wer killed. ( getting shoved up a chimney upside down after being strangled. And haveing her face carved by a razor and her head choped off). But anyways the sailor comes back and tells the detectives what happened and what he saw, (he is scared to death that hes gona be wrongly accused guilty even though he is innocent). He is found innocent and the story ends.
Harris was inspired by Poe's novel with the same title. It's about a guy who is initially convinced to be falsely accused of the murder of two girls, but eventually finds out that he is a schizophrenic killer. See the 2 lines before the last chorus...
Incredible song from their best album!
Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story, which is recognized as the first detective story, hence the Edgar Awards for Mystery.
It's told from the point of view of the companion of M. Dupin, who used the deductive method of ratiocination to solve seemingly impossible riddles.
Obviously the model for Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and his friend Watson. Perhaps even Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot.
The song has little to do with the actual story, with references to the plight of the accused, but nothing about the OurangOotang, as I believe is the original spelling.
Gendarmes are the french police force in case somebody were wondering
great song, one of my favourites
I always thought that Di'Anno sings "two young bitches" at the end of the song, indicating that he (the teller of the tale) may have had guilt in the matter...
Also at the end, I've always thought he says "And I've got to say I've done it before," meaning that though he doesn't think he did these murders, he knows he had killed in the past...
I had heard this song, but I didn't like it as much until I had read the story.
In my opinion, one of the greatest Maiden songs ever. Paul Dianno is very underrated.
Very Burtonseque opening bass!
