Cry In The Sun Lyrics

You cleaned out your room
And under your bed
Lay a picture long forgotten
With a hand to your head
You sigh out loud
As a memory washes over
And buries you

A summer rainstorm
But the shed was dry
With a girl from Carolina
And you held her so tight
For the warmth that the rain denied
As the timer moved to a flash

And so alive
You listen to them when they say

Cry in the sun
When the devil beats his wife
If you cry cry cry in the sun
Hope I never see the price of my freedom

We dance and sing out
And traced the moon
As it crawled across the night sky
And covered in dew
A lover's pact
Well here's to now and don't look back
And oh how I tried to heed the words written here

For everyone
If there is a person place or time
That brings you back and makes you feel alive
Before your reason clouds your eyes
You could rule the world
If you wanted to

Well I hear you're living
Far away
And that life's treated you well
You know that we were young and this picture's old
But I can still hear you say
Through the pounding of the rain

And oh, if you try
Tell me can you hear them say

Cry in the sun
When the devil beats his wife
If you cry cry cry in the sun
Hope I never see the price of my freedom

I’ve lived the “Hope I never see the price of my freedom” for 23 years. But I see it all the time. That’s a hurt that we have to live with whether by cause or not. I heard this as I was going through a divorce after 20 years of marriage and this song reminds me of how nothing goes unaffected. Life is good and we can enjoy it through the struggles. Try as we might all damage can’t be repaired but it can teach us. There are a couple other songs that deliver the same emotional response “Hearts on Fire” by Scars on 45s and “Baltimore” by Counting Crows

I'm still yet to hear this song but I just read the first verse and that alone brought me to tears. So many people can relate to that.

As far as meaning goes, it's pretty straightforward, but oh my God is the imagery beautiful. You can feel in the lyrics all those sensory memories that come rushing back when he finds that old photo.

"The Devil's beating his wife" is a Southern expression for the weather phenomenon of rain and sunshine occurring at the same time. I don't know whether "cry in the sun" is a common term for it, but it certainly evokes that image. Part of his memory of that summer rainstorm in the shed? A metaphor for the simultaneous joy and pain of his relationship with the girl from Carolina? I think it's both.
