Alice Childress Lyrics
Some summers in the evening
After 6 or so
I walk on down the hill
And maybe buy a beer
I think about my friends
Sometimes I wish they lived out here
But they wouldn't dig this town
No they wouldn't dig this town
Try not to think about it
Alice Childress
Try not to think about it anymore
Try not to think about it
Alice Childress
Anymore, no not anymore
Alice, the world is full of ugly things
That you can't change
Pretend it's not that way
That's my idea of faith
You can blow it off
And say there's good in nearly everyone
Just give them all a chance
Now let's give them all a chance
No it didn't work out
No it didn't work out
The way we thought it would
No it didn't work out
An arranged marriage is not so good
Thank God it's you
You know your timing is impeccable
And I'm not fooling you
I don't know what to do
Some dude just knocked me cold
And left me on the sidewalk
Took everything I had
And everything I had
Try not to think about it
Alice Childress
Try not to think about it anymore
It's getting late where you are
Alice Childress
Anymore, no not anymore
Anymore, no not anymore
After 6 or so

I don't know if the speciffic details of his life nessicarilly have to relate to the song. I always took it to be about a guy who moved away from Alice Childress, and maybe she's more naive or sensitive than him so he tries to comfort her a lot, but the reality is he's very lonely and is getting mugged and maybe wants to give up. And maybe the fact that he has to reassure her that the world is still good is whats keeping him going or questioning everything.
who is alice childress????
shes a playwright. i dont think the songs actually about her though. ben probably just liked the name
there's a book (maybe its a play too) called "A Hero Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich" written by Alice Childress...but that's all I know about it
There's an official BFF songbook that explains (not verbatim), "The song has nothing to do with the playwright Alice Childress. It was based on an experience of Ben's friend Anna Goodman, who was working in a hospital. It seems that one day there was a mental patient named Alice Childress who decided to douse Anna with mop water." And yes, I believe Ben just tacked on the name, as the song's not about HER either :) ...Ben has talked about his habit of using unrelated-but-real names for songs that aren't about that person or people. And who has written more "name" songs than Ben Folds? Think "Alice Childress," "Kate," "Steven's Last Night in Town," "Jane," "Annie Waits," "Zak and Sara," "Tom and Mary," "Fred Jones Pt. 2," "The Ascent of Stan," "Losing Lisa," "Eddie Walker," "Emaline"...you get the idea.

This song is just so awesome . .
"Thank God it's you You know your timing is impeccable And I'm not fooling you I don't know what to do Some dude just knocked me cold And left me on the sidewalk Took everything I had And everything I had"
I don't really know the meaning, but it just sounds so good.
I have no basis for thinking this other than the lyrics "no it didn't work out the way we thought it would" and "an arranged marriage is not so good" but is it possible this is about one of his divorces? (Hasn't he been through two? I know Fraley or whatever her name is is his 3rd wife). Plus maybe is it possible that he's in LA and she's still in North Carolina? Cuz in Don't Change Your Plans he talks about LA and in this song he talks about his friends not living in that town, and he also says "it's getting late where you are" and there's a 4 hour time difference between coasts . . . Mostly I just made all this stuff up through obscure links in my own head, but couldn't those be right?
but ben lives in australia. or did he just move there? i mean, seriously.
he went on tour in australia. he's lived in nashville throughout most of his active career but good try!

My favorite quote in the world is from this song: "Alice, the world is full of ugly things that you can't change / Pretend it's not that way / That's my idea of faith". It just means so much to me.
