Music Must Change Lyrics
Deep in the back of my mind is an unrealized sound
Every feeling I get from the street says it soon could be found
When I hear the cold lies of the pusher, I know it exists
It's confirmed in the eyes of the kids, emphasized with their fists
But the high has to rise from the low
Like volcanoes explode through the snow
The mosquito's sting brings a dream
But the poison's derange
The music must change
For we're chewing a bone
We soared like the sparrow hawk flied
Then we dropped like a stone
Like the tide and the waves
Growing slowly in range
Crushing mountains as old as the Earth
So the music must change
Sometimes at night, I wake up and my body's like ice
The sound of the running wild stallion, the noise of the mice
And I wondered if then I could hear into all of your dreams
I realize now it was really the sound of your screams
But death always leads into life
But the street fighter swallows the knife
Am I so crazy to feel that it's here prearranged?
The music must change
It's gets higher and higher
Smoldering like leaves in the sun
Then it bursts into fire
Its rhythm grows strong
It's so new and so strange
Like bells in the clouds, then again
The music must change
But is this song so different?
Am I doing it all again?
It may have been done before
But then music's an open door
Deep in the back of my mind is an unrealized sound
Every feeling I get from the street says it soon could be found
When I hear the cold lies of the pusher, I know it exists
It's confirmed in the eyes of the kids, emphasized with their fists
But the high has to rise from the low

Whoa, no one has commented on this??? This is my favorite track from WHO ARE YOU. It sounds so wonderful.
According to the story, Keith Moon couldn't play to match the 6/8 time, which is why the rhythm is kept in the toe-tapping and the occasional claps. Personally, I like the fact that there isn't much percussion. But the song doesn't seem like it would be that difficult for Keith to drum on. Maybe he was just really drunk or something.
Oh, and another thing. Just to set the record straight, Keith Moon did NOT drown in a swimming pool or choke on his own vomit. He accidentally overdosed on sleeping pills. Anyone who says any different should be punched in the face. Thank you.
One slight correction. They weren't sleeping pills, although they were sedatives. Keith OD'd on chlormethiazole which is intended to relieve the symptoms of alchohol withdrawal. That's right, Keith OD'd as a result of trying to get sober.

This song has such a smooth sound for a realistically, harsh statement. To me it iseems like a statement about pop music's magnificent ability to sound the same. only two changes: "smouldering like leaves in the sun" not smouldering like leaves in the 1 and "deep in the back of my mind is an unrealized sound" not deep in the back of my is an unrealized sound
It, like many songs from this album, had to do with realization of alcoholism, drug addiction, and most of all, loss of relevance in music. He was always going out and running into the punk followers (and musicians) telling him he was losing relevance. He was admitting that he and his music was a casuality of change, and that other genres (like punk) were going to take over, and his own habits weren't going to help. He realized that other music is taking over, and that his efforts are no longer avant garde or cutting edge. He bemoans his group's up's and down's (we soared like a sparrow hawk flied, then we dropped like a stone). Pete's trying to deal with handing over the crown to (at that time) punk and new wave music and no longer being "important".
With the great musical smoothness & lyrics, I feel Roger's vocals were superb in completing this song. it stays with me to this day.

@Mcduff interestingly Roger said he hated having to sing this song live. Must have been challenging and he also said he was sick of having to sing wont get fooled again/

I love this song, one of myfavorite albums, but never associated the meaning to be about music at all. Clearly, 'New Song' is about the corporate contract demands and such, but here it resonates a feeling of addiction. Not lost yet, but hitting a bottom that is unacceptable and the desire to control and not surrender (which ends pretty poorly with a rough ride, a lot of heartache, and dozens of totally awesome tunes that "tear right at my soul")
Kenney Jones does a great job on the live version from Chicago 1979. Check it out on YouTube.
