Coast Is Clear Lyrics

Above my bed
In this ugly room
Hangs the whisper
Of the sandman

You can be my father
For the love he has shown
It's just a little too late
It's never enough to swallow those pills
Now I'm sick and always will be

Take it
I don't want it
You can have what you like
Just don't try to trick me to sleep
Then turn out those lights

You can be my father
For the love he has shown
It's just a little too late
It's never enough to swallow those pills
Now I'm sick and always will be

Ah ah ah ah
Drains and radiators
You can be my father
Drains and radiators
For the love

You can be my father
For the love he has shown
It's just a little too late
It's never enough to swallow those pills
Now I'm sick and always will be

Ah ah ah ah
Just when you thought it was alright
Just when you thought it was alright

Coast is clear
Coast is clear
Coast is clear
Coast is clear

I think this is about a dysfunctional relationship.

"You can be my father/For the love he has shown/It's just a little too late/It's never enough to swallow those pills/Now I'm sick and always will be"

I think she's saying her lover is caring about her now as if he were her father (maybe he's old too? Could be she's dating an old man?) but it's too late because she feels disgusted. her mentioning the pills might mean she's trying to forget about her problems and it's never enough to help her.

"Just when you thought it was alright" and "Coast is clear" might mean she's had forbidden relationship with an older man.

I logged in to upvote the Red Pyramid's comment - it fits perfectly.

Also, the live version's much more amazing than the studio version. MAN do I wish I had seen them live.

Definitely recalling feeling abandoned by her father and the nightmares that brought her as a child. I believe the father and love reference is an absence of love. and how her current relationship is just as distant or absent and makes her feel the same but it's not enough to swallow those pills (sleeping pills? suicide?). Being abandoned by some man will never be enough to make her take her own life but she will continue on in sickness (emotional sickness, that is).
