The Fake Headlines Lyrics

I wrote the news today
In the tent outside the midway rides
And as my money flew
Singing to their pockets you
Could only know your shame
Knowing what the good ones do

And when you see the bruises on my legs from kicking pills, yeah
Then you see how recklessly the pages are filled
Make headlines, believe them come back
Make headlines, believe them come back

Want to be upside down
Maybe thrown from side to side?
Want to fall from the clouds
Sailing like a ship at sea?
Want to think out so loud
That the fashion police break me?

And when you see the bruises on my legs from kicking pills, yeah
Then you see how recklessly the pages I fill
Make headlines, believe them come back
Make headlines, believe them come back

You'll cry
You'll cry, believe me, come back

I wrote the news today
In the tent outside the midway rides
And when my money flew
Singing to their pockets I
I filled the whole front page
With the catchiest words I could find

Fake headlines, believe me come back
Fake headlines, believe them come back

The imagery of the carnival atmosphere with the midway and rollercoasters seem to reflect how the narrator views the media - a circus. The headlines are just thrown together and selectively filtered and skewed so the reading public just eats it up and "come[s] back" for more.

I don't understand the line about "kicking pills," anyone?

@little_stranger That line might be about "kicking the habit of taking pills (drugs,)" but I don't think it is. It's probably more like, he gets flack (bruised) for writing false stories just to sell newspapers. Why bruises on his legs? Because that's the path in life he took, so he's "walking" through it.

well...kicking, being a slang term for quiting...and ask anyone whose ever quit pills/booze/etc. will leave "bruises" cause it ain't easy, if you're kicking hard enough that is.

This song is about taking drugs to write music, and how we as the music consuming public don't care what the artist actually goes through physically or emotionally for them to write the songs, including total self-destruction, as long as the song is catchy. in fact don't we idolize the rock and roll suicides?

@enjoymywaffles I can see that, yeah. Though at the same time, I see other interpretations that are valid. Words don't need to just mean one thing in songs, they can mean numerous things.

(I gotta speak for anyone else reading, too; not just you.)

A Masterpiece of production more than the actual lyrics, but they fit well. Contains a great line "And when you see the bruises on my legs from kicking pills." That always stuck with me for some reason. Dammit. I've always had an affection for bands that have more hooks than substance.

@dougievile The part about his legs seems to be about going through paths in life. Other ways to say that would be "ways" and "roads." (Like "don't go down that road, it leads to trouble.")

The line could also be about "kicking the habit" of drugs (pills,) and the bruises he gets (pain he goes through) while trying to kick the habit. Either that, or it's about selling the "drugs" (stories,) and the sacrifices he's making to sell such stories. He gets flack for it for walking/going through such a place, so his "legs"...

Totally agree with you, dougievile, on that line.

I think this song is about this dude that breaks up w/ a chic for some bogus reason or vise versa, and the girl wants to go back but she has to much pride and doesnt want to lose face to her freinds, or anyone, who doesnt think they will get back together. But then a.c. is like make headlines belive them come back...cause he is a musical pimp...and neco case is hott.

It seems to me that this song is about a junkie journalist that makes up stories to get paid and feed his pill habit.

It seems to me that this song is about a fat pile of nothing and it's really good
