On Your Own Lyrics
Tell me what you see
Was it a dream? Was I in it?
Life seemed so obscene until it's over
Who knows?
All I want is someone who can fill the hole
In the life I know
In between life and death when there's nothing left
Do you wanna know?
You come in on your own
And you leave on your own
Forget the lovers you've know
And your friends on your own
Tell me if it's true
That I need you, you are changing
I've seen this road before down on the floor
It is hurting me
All I want is someone who can fill the hole in the life I know
In between life and death when there's nothing left
Do you want to know?
You come in on your own
And you leave on your own
Forget the lovers you've know
And your friends on your own
Lies I've got to get rid of this whole inside
Was it a dream? Was I in it?
Life seemed so obscene until it's over
Who knows?
In the life I know
In between life and death when there's nothing left
Do you wanna know?
And you leave on your own
Forget the lovers you've know
And your friends on your own
That I need you, you are changing
I've seen this road before down on the floor
It is hurting me
In between life and death when there's nothing left
Do you want to know?
And you leave on your own
Forget the lovers you've know
And your friends on your own

i think this song is about someone who got dumped by their partner unexpectidly and at first they denied caring but they're going through denail to try and convince themselves they never cared.
He seems to be certain that he cares, but that's just my opinion.
On Your Own, to me, is just a song about lonliness and longing. Richard seems to have been left down by all of those close to him, causing him to feel like he'll never find someone to fill the void, dooming him to eternal solitude. Or some shit like that. But after listening to "Lucky Man", it appears things improved eventually.
I read an interview where he said that it was all about loneliness.
"You come in on your own and you leave on your own" = You're born screaming into this world by yourself and you'll die by yourself (a la Donnie Darko: "Every living creature on earth dies alone." ).
Sorry to be bleak but it's true...
ANorthernSoul76 beat me to it - we are born alone, we die alone, and what comes inbetween is...inconsequential? Irrelevant? Or the most important part of all? I can't really tell from the lyrics. Another depressing Verve song, but a good one nonetheless.
And yeah, I hear the crackle too. And it keeps me up at night...
I agree with the comment above The lyrics seem to be on the theme of loneliness. It seems Ashcroft is finding it hard being on his own and wants to change as a result
tell me what you've seen, was it a dream...life seems so obscene... he is quoting raw truth of what he knows about life down to the basics. he sums up a life in basic terms . he is painfully raw about his descritption of life. Its bleak. you come in on your own and you leave on your own,,breaking it down to meaningless time spent..but then..he admits the pain of the hole he feels. The pain is admitted by him. and that he wants to feel better than this bleak outlook he has. Gotta get rid of this hole inside the rotton thoughts that are bringing me down.He knows that there is better . There is an underlayer of hope covered by profound cynicism and outlook of a hopeless destiny
I've always thought this song was about an old man looking back on his life. All the mistakes he's made, the lover's and friends he's lost, the complete loneliness he feel's now he's old and it's too late to make things right.. Something about this song reminds of Hurt by Johnny Cash.. But from what I can see it's actually about Richard Ashcroft's own experiences.. But the great thing about a good song is the audience can make their own interpretation of what they believe the songs about. It's my favourite Verve song!
the acoustic piano version is better it is reel to the point where everything seems desperate
This is my favorite Verve song. I agree with all of you regarding your interpretations.
Is it me or there a crackle/hiss sound distortion at 2:54? Wonder if its on the original tapes or just my copy? Anyway, I've always thought the repeated lines at the end were "can't get rid of this hole inside".
