Hummer Lyrics
Faith lies in
The ways of sin
I chased the charmed
But I don't want them anymore
And in their eyes I was alive
A fool's disguise
Take me away from you
Shame my tongue
Fat with promise all along
But when I woke up from that sleep
I was happier than I'd ever been
When you decide
That your life is a prize
Renew and revive
It's alright honey
It's alright, yeah
Happiness will make you wonder
Will I feel OK?
It scares the disenchanted
Far away
Yeah I want something new
But what am I supposed to do about you
Yeah I love you, it's true
Life's a bummer
When you're a hummer
Life's a drag
Ask yourself a question
Anyone but me
Are you free?
Ask yourself a question
Anyone but me
Are you free?
Do you feel
Love is real?
The ways of sin
I chased the charmed
But I don't want them anymore
A fool's disguise
Take me away from you
Fat with promise all along
But when I woke up from that sleep
I was happier than I'd ever been
That your life is a prize
Renew and revive
It's alright honey
It's alright, yeah
Will I feel OK?
It scares the disenchanted
Far away
But what am I supposed to do about you
Yeah I love you, it's true
When you're a hummer
Life's a drag
Anyone but me
Are you free?
Anyone but me
Are you free?
Love is real?

Billy has said that this song is based on the idea that life is not for those who are happy and content but for those who are miserable and disenchanted.
or maybe happiness isn't really about all those people who always have a smile on there face all perky and shit. maybe real happiness is in the moment when your miserable and you see someone you love that makes you feel better even for that small moment. and mayb thats sorta wat this song is on about. you think, i mite be depressed but you can live for those small moments of real happiness. like the line "happiness will make you wonder", (the best line of the song) says if you've been 'happy' for a long time it makes you question whether or not it's real and how long it will last but if it's just that small moment that comes and goes you know it's real. anyway i agree with y2doggy kick ass song
WOW! Do you have a PHD in song interpretation? lol. That was excellent!

I'm probably off, but Billy's quote might have to do with that in spiritual growth, you need pain. And if you don't have any pain in your life, there's no point.
I ain't got a clue.
I like to think of it being about a guy who is depressed and in love with some girl. He hides his his true personality from everyone else, who think of him as normal like the rest of them ("in their eyes, i was alive/a fool's disguise"). He wants to feel better, but he's stopped from doing this because of his love for the girl, which isn't reciprocated, contributing to his depression ("yeah i want something new/but what am i supposed to do about you?") Things could be better for him if he didn't have to see her on a regular...

Things could be better for him if he didn't have to see her on a regular basis ("take me away from you"). He's also annoyed at himself for all the false promises he made to himself to do something about it ("shame my tongue/fat with promise all along"). He's tired of his life ("life's a bummer/when you're a hummer/life's a drag"(a "hummer" being someone who drifts through life with no real purposes or goals, prone to daydreams, humming etc.)). He also knows how hard it is to become happy - after so long being sad, it takes ages for you to be truly at peace, which is enough to stop others from even attempting to be happy ("happiness will make you wonder/will i feel ok/it scares the disenchanted/far away") He ends by wondering whether the girl he loves truly loves him back ("do you feel/love is real?")
" Faith lies in The ways of sin" Someone want's to get somewhere but there life stands in the way, a life of sin.
"I chased the charmed But I don't want them anymore"
A famous person wanted to be famous but now they don't want anything more.
"And in their eyes I was alive A fool's disguise Take me away from you" Everyone thought that person was fine, this person masks their discontent with their appearence.
"Shame my tongue Fat with promise all along"
I lied and I broke a promise
"But when I woke up from that sleep I was happier than I'd ever been" When I realised my problem I was glad.
"When you decide That your life is a prize" When you find out what life is about.
"Renew and revive It's alright honey It's alright, yeah" Aim your goals at that.
"Happiness will make you wonder Will I feel OK?" I look happy, but i'm not.
"It scares the disenchanted Far away" Just that, it makes it look like there is no sorrow in that person.
"Yeah I want something new But what am I supposed to do about you Yeah I love you, it's true" I think you is this persons fans and they are tired of getting nowhere.
"Life's a bummer When you're a hummer Life's a drag" Life sucks when you are feeling this way
"Ask yourself a question Anyone but me I ain't free" I'm too busy
Ask yourself a question Anyone but me I ain't free
"Do you feel Love is real?" Can this person feel happy again?
I think it was based on Billy and how he was so sad around the Siamese Dream period.
he is saying how religion and ignorance go hand in hand. if you're religious, you're ignorant to the wonders of life.
"Faith lies in The ways of sin I chased the charmed But I don't want them anymore"
sinning is something people naturally wanna do, but a lot of people don't because their "faith" is in the way of doing so. he chased the afterlife like all other religious folk, but he doesn't wanna be a part of the religious group anymore.
"But when I woke up from that sleep I was happier than I'd ever been" referring to being religious as being asleep - like being on autopilot in life, not really embracing and living it to the fullest. when he woke up from that long period of sleep, he was a happier person.
all in all, i think the song sends a message that says religious people take life for granted and don't enjoy it because they are too worried about being perfect in gods eyes just so they can go to heaven. and he used to be like that, but changed and experienced life in a whole new light.
well uh... the dude is sick of trying to please everyone especially his lover who expects a lot out of him? then he realizes he can just be himself and be perfectly content. he just has to somehow tell her this instead of letting her trying to figure him out
I think this song is about a guy trying to break free from a woman that has him following her lead and not being able to be his own person. I think when it says "lifes a bummer, when you're a hummer" that it's like a bee and how it follows the lead of other bees, because you very rarely see just one bee.
its so nice in the song where it goes 'dooooooooo you feeeel looooove is reaaal' that makes me smile :)
all i can really say about it is that it has one of the coolest endings on SD. It literally sounds like the band is being blown away by the wind or something.
@pumkinhed It does have the most beautiful ending!
