Adam Lives in Theory Lyrics
Adam lives in theory
Trying to turn stone into bread
Masquerading like he got it figured out
Cut off from the sunshine, only smart in his own head
Leaving his descendants to hope and doubt
Left to his devices, those worth the sacrifices
Praying to the alter of himself
Making pilgrimages, thinking he's religious
Like he's got all the light, and no one else
He takes the unsuspected
Cuz he knows they're not connected
And he shows them how to be just as he is
Virtually real, and commercially appealed
To the lust of all the people where he lives
Eve was so naive, blinded by the pride and greed
Wanting to be intellectual
Drifting from the way she got turned down one day
And now she thinks that she's bisexual
Caught up in emotion
Burning up in her devotion
To the king of exploitaion in the field
She handed him her virtue
Cuz he told her "I won't hurt you"
So she lay with him to see how good it feels
Now can you tell me, what, what we gonna do now
Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now
Now can you tell me, what, what we gonna do now
Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now
Now after the sensation, and the empty fornication
She brought affection home into her bed, quickly multiplying
Now the 3 of them are dieing by the poison she perceived to be good head
Now Eve and her husband are perverted in their judgment
Cuz everything appears to be the same
They entertain suggestion,
Next time just use protection
Desiring to cover up their shame
But much to their demise, poor decision closed their eyes
To the very antidote to their dilemma
Burning in their lust,
Both of them were dealt to us
Destroying the original agenda
Praying to the sky, in order to maintain a lie
They exhausted every possible conclusion,
They can't even entertain the solution,
In a brain filled with vain information and pollution
Hiding from the truth,
He provided an excuse to explain away his desperate situation
When confronted, blamed his wife
Giving birth to carnal life
Refusing to acknowledge what he done
Now if we can agree with who created us to be
Who says we're guilty everyone before his eyes
Making no exceptions, since the day of our conception
Predisposed to hating truth, and loving lies
Then can you tell me, what, what we gonna do now
Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now
Then can you tell me, what, what we gonna do now
Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now
Stop walking in pride, let the thief be crucified
Un-learn everything you know, and let him teach you
Line upon line, every step upon pre-step, say goodbye,
To this decaying social system
He wants to know, how far we're willing to go
If we love him like we say we do,
He will try us
Just don't regress,
Or slip into hopelessness
Once he's satisfied his love,
He won't deny us,
And then he'll tell us,
What, what we gonna do now
Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now
And then he'll tell us,
What, what we gonna do now
Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now

This song is about all of humanity. We are "Adam and Eve." I think she is talking about those who don't believe in GOD.
"Now if we can agree with who created us to be" (Those who doubt His existence or believe Him to be something else)
"Stop walking in pride, let the thief be crucified" (At Christ's crucifixion, they let Barabas, a criminal go instead of Jesus who was innocent)
"He wants to know, how far we're willing to go If we love him like we say we do, He will try us" (Her interpretation of a scpripture)
"Just don't regress, Or slip into hopelessness Once he's satisfied his love, He won't deny us,
And then he'll tell us, What, what we gonna do now" (He'll tell us is referring to God's salvation plan)
I enjoy hearing her perspective on our "decaying system" and our corrupt leaders. And also that she connects it with the denying of Christ.
This whole album is indeed the most raw, emotional, and Truthful performance I believe Mtv has ever broadcast. As for this song, I'm quite sure it is all about the mess humanity is in and have always been in since the fall of man. But to say this song says nothing about God I believe is an extreme oversight of the meaning in the words that compose this song.
This song and album is one of the greatest of all time. You must listen carefully and see how she parallels so many things. There is an obvious talking point of HIV, which she also seems to link to the original sin of Adam. How far are we willing to go and allow this same seed to permeate our lives? Sexual deviancy, paganism, idolatry? Are we simply trusing in a hopeless system that orchestrates our demise while we lavish in the flesh?

As I listen to this song, the image that comes to my mind is of this leader/expert of theology & religion that has what he’s sees as great intellect. I think of this person who makes it his mission in life to disprove or dissect anything only to put himself in the position of being the most knowledgeable of everything. And it works for him. It works so much that people are convinced. As a result, he gathers a great number of followers. But the truth of the matter is that his mission is perverted because he only seeks to serve himself. He has perverted the ideas in such a way that they are sprinkled with just enough facts to appear solid. But there is nothing about this man or his ideas that are divine. The core of who he is wicked.
To those who are out of touch with their spirituality, and even to those who think that they are, everything about his ideas is appealing. To them it’s new and attractive. But they are blind to the fact that his ideas are false. In his selfish pursuit of worldly knowledge, he has managed to ignore the true higher power, Jesus. He has forgotten that the reason why he breathes is because of the Lord. No man should put himself in the place of God.
The rest of the song speaks to the lost souls that he has claimed, and eventually the fall of mankind who has been deceived. As they are falling, there is the resounding:
Then can you tell me, what, what we gonna do now Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now Then can you tell me, what, what we gonna do now Where we gonna go now, what we gonna say now
But there is a reward for those who kept their hearts on the Lord. Those who rejected the deception…
But that’s just my interpretation.
not to be the "ANGRY BLACK MAN", but in the song adam is a metaphor for the "WHITE MAN", and Eve is "MOTHER AFRICA", and how african americans have been decieved and have forgotten that they are infact the kings of the earth, that they are more closely related to God than anyone else. I'm not saying that i agree with all this, but if you look deeper into the song "..making pilgramiges, pretending he's religious...", "he takes the unsuspected..cause he knows their not connected..." These lines refer to superiority that whites felt they had over blacks and how blacks became subordinate over time.....

Wow, I never saw it that way. I always percieved this song as having many different meanings. The obvious one seems to be that people are spreading AIDS because they are ignorant to the disease, and believe they are in love. It could also mean that Eve and Adam have poisoned all of mankind with their sins.
And then there's a theme of hope underlying all of this mess that humanity is in. I like this song, not for its obvious biblical references, but because it is very creative in telling a story that can be interpreted in many ways.
This is a great song. It's really long also, almost 7 minutes. On MTV Unplugged 2.0 she said this before the song: she calls the song adam lives in theory and she refers to Adam as all of humanity...ect. this song I beieve she is not talking anything about GOD!
i think everyone can interpret all the songs on this album differently, but I'm really feelin ophelia219's breakdown. This CD was just a musical relief to me all together. I needed something like this.

mehh. I'm not a fan of that lyric. It seems like another example of how religion has influenced someone to believe that homosexuality is morally wrong... time to grow up
I'm also not a fan of the entire message of this song. Being agnostic, I don't believe that every human is effed up "since the day of our conception," and I would never tell my future children that they are.

i personally think that this line refers to women being mistreated in society and backing away from the pursuit of intellectualism only to instead seek power in femininity and sexuality. for example "she didnt enjoy being "turned down" by the pride and greed of other people so she instead found solice in selling her sex (the images of teen american girls experimenting in college with bisexuality just to gain attention comes to mind).

anyway i had the same ill feelings towards this lyric but ive come to analyze it differently over time. this song is so terribly deep that i think we'll only truly understand it if we tap into lauryns mind and feel the nuances she feels.
a major theme i tend to find in a lot of lauryns songs is "equality" so maybe that has something to do with how i feel about this lyric.
Not only is it morally wrong, but it is also what is going to be the end of America. It's apart of the Agenda of America to lower population. The more homosexuals the less reproduction. I'm not afraid of gays or anything but I'm afraid for gays and all of humanity. Just like Sodom and Gomorrah, America will be destroyed when the Son of man returns.

Yeah, I was enjoying this song until that line. Being Bisexual, that almost came off as insulting to me but then again, the lyrics are so layered that it can very well mean anything.

This is a song, to all people who have not yet experienced becoming conscious. To all people who live by patriarchal society ways, which are the ways of "fantasy" versus what "reality" is. Lauryn has become conscious to the true reality, and now the fantasy part of her life is in the past. Because she realized, Adam, which is all humanity with his ego, thinks he has it all figured out. Cut off from the Source from hath he's come to be. Raising his kids to believe like him. Then there is Eve and she also succumbs to the plight of this world, lacking true meaning which can only be found in truly loving one's self, others as thyself, and the Source. Their children too have been subjected to the poison, being of the unconscious world. By pretending everything is okay, they are in denial and are not able to contemplate the answer. We are taught from the beginning to "hate the truth and love the lies. Stop walking in pride", let your ego die. Unlearn all that we have learned and let your inner self be the teacher. Say goodbye to society's archaic dying ways. The Source wants to know how far we are willing to go for Him. Don't waiver in your convictions, stay strong, "Once He's satisfied His love, He will not deny us." He will guide us and tells us what to do next, if we would only listen and believe in His ways. Only through Him, is where we find true meaning in life.
