I'm pretty sure that this song has nothing to do with religion. I think that its about how humanity is right now in the sense that we are mostly selfish. We (most of the world) are closed minded to the idea of helping others, whether it be charities or helping someone with a flat tire or whatever things we can do to help each other as humans.
So I think that by his dream of unity, he wants us all to strive together with the common goal of happiness, but since "people stray towards more selfish ways" that dream is getting further and further away. And instead we are "just tryin to get by".
This song for me means that he wants to try and bring people together but as a society we're too stubborn to work together, and I think it comes back to religion because Unity would come so much easier if we didn't have these religious barriers, but people stray to what they think would have them more accepted in society so they turn towards the choice of everybody else. Once we can break through those barriers of religiously oppressive thoughts and ideals, we can truly unite as people.
