One Of These Mornings

Four simple lines, yet so perfectly put. To me the song is about someone who is in a relationship (either romantic or otherwise) that has its faults and it's almost as if this is what goes through this person's head everytime a fight occurs. Like, I'm not going to hang around forever if you continue to treat me in this manner.

Having taken many samples from field recordings and traditional gospel songs, I think that the presence of these lyrics isn't as simple as "he said/she said" interpretation.

Different versions of these lyrics can be found going back through African American history, taking root in gospel, blues, and oral tradition.

In Zora Neale Hurston's 1937 novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God," the main character, coloured Janie Crawford, alludes to these lyrics with her spoken line, "Some of dese mornin's and it won't be long, you gointuh wake up callin' me and Ah'll be gone."

I was reading the book and stopped and thought, "That's a Moby song!" So I dug a bit deeper.

So a song that seems a simple electronic number by a tiny little white guy carries the weight of a nation struggling to free itself from slavery.

Any else completley freaked out when they hear this song? Coz every time I hear it, I think of Without A Trace, and the episodes with Graham Spaulding. Conor O'Farrell gives a truly amazing performance as the paedophile teacher, but the song totally freaks me out!

I just saw the Without A Trace episode that had this song. Wow. As soon as I heard it I had to look it up-- it's so simple, but surprisingly powerful.

Several people have mentioned relationships, which I believe is probably the real reason behind it, but it also makes me think about the hinted meaning (as it was used in WAT) of someone leaving literally-- death.

In that vein, it makes think of someone who's not appreciated, and who is telling others that one day they will look for them and they won't be there. What will happen then?

I think it means the woman is telling the man if he keeps the way he is, one day he'll wake up and he's going to look for her, but she'll be gone.

I view this song as someone who is tired of his or her life (or relationship) and wants to leave. Just to walk away and never come back, to disappear out of the life of the people who love him/her forever. I get the feeling that the person does leave eventually, even though that's never said in the song.

I think it's such a romantic concept (romantic in the original poetic sense). For someone to just leave up and go without a word...of course it will do some damage to the ones you leave behind, but I still respect the idea of it.
