Greg is talking about an aspect of history that always seems to repeat itself, thus forming a pattern. This pattern being everyone searching "the answer" to all the world's problem's, even if it isnt a valid answer, just something to immediately soothe their ears. This song is also a reminder that the problem's of this world will, most probably, never vanish and that no one truly has all the answers even though they might seem to. ex: politicians, the pope, religious leaders, ....

i thought this song was about religon and following one person rather than doing your own thing and coming up with your own belifs and ideas

I believe that the song is about how people explain what life and try to get "the answer" to life and its meaning. and what i believe greg or brett is trying to say is that you may think you have the answer but they don't believe it
to me this song is about people trying to find the answer to the worlds problems, but if you keep on following what other people say, the answer is perfect for you but it will not solve anything, and in reality most problems never go away.
