This song is about the people who overpopulate southern Cal. The ones who spend money they dont have, the ones who dress in clothes they cannot afford, the ones who think they are some fucking celebrity who everyone is watching.. Competing with the rest of the ants on the hill. Sucked in to the life of 'look at me'.
I live in the heart of it all and am sickened at what's important to some people. And whats not.

I think he's talking about the overabundance of wealth and materials that seem to plague Southern California and how mercilessly people are competing with each other to attain it. This song was obviously written in response to the glorification of being rich and having everything that seems to infected the society over there. Thats my interpretation at least.
I think this song is that how every thinks Southern Cali is the best place in the world but really it's not. It's all a lie. And you have to compete to live.
The first verse is about how people who are original and not influenced by others are part of the best bands, etc. The second is about how copycats will fail. In short, being a top superstar doesn't mean being the best.
