Anxiety Lyrics

It's a love song to the self, a story recapped every day,
It's a world of bogus feelings and a world of slow decay,
It's a world of laughter hidden by this world of fear and torment,
It's a game of strange compulsion, our visceral convulsion:
for love of life, anxiety for pain,
, a feeling that you know you can't contain.
destroys us but it drives the common man.
Foundation of society, anxiety. Suppress it if you can.
The caste of coffee achievers didn't perform like they planned.
The morning rush hour traffic is our play of false elan.
So run around your frantic track and lay you down to sleep;
Tomorrow's the redemption, we strive for that exception.
for love of life, anxiety for pain,
, a fear that you have nothing more to gain.
destroys us but it drives the common man.
Foundation of society, anxiety. Suppress it if you can.
What are we angry for?
We all need a common cure.
That common goal for which you strive:
To have more than the other (have more than the other) guy.
The quest for truth, the quest for gold, yeah, we end up all the same
The common lie, the righteous cry, we end up all the same.
The angry crowd, those lost and found, everybody's all the same.
The poet's pen, these words I lend, we all bend to
for love of life, anxiety for pain,
, a feeling that you know you can't contain.
destroys us but it drives the common man.
Foundation of society, anxiety.

Well i'd say this song is about anxiety.... Saying how it's a natural, or existing part of life at least. Which it is, foundation of society, infact = anxiety. If someone living within the staous quo stops doing that, quits his daily job e.t.c. and daily routine and schemes. Anxiety will most likely kick in after a while and most likely he'll/she'll go back to it's daily routines and schemes cause of it -

"a fear that you have nothing more to gain. destroys us but it drives the common man."

While someone trying to do something on his/her own living outside the statous quo feels the same anxiety trying to draw her/him to do what everyone else does and into the staous quo. But even if this person does do something different on it's own, still the driving force is most likely the anxiety. - Foundation of society. Basically meaning if we break free from society and stray away from it, anxiety will still lead us to do something. Just that we'll do something different instead.

Yep, anxiety. Everyone gets it, everyone wants to get rid of it but it keeps society working.

"What are we angry for? We all need a common cure."

This is currently my favorite BR song. I say currently because as I grow, so does my taste for BR. Amazing how I know all their music but appreciate it differently the older I get.

This song to me means we have all this self induced pressure (anxiety) to be the best. We measure that by money or possessions. So we have this anxiety to impress others and think we are advancing our lives with these material things. In the end, we all end up the same no matter what things or people we have acquired through our lives.

That's the next thing I need to understand. Other BR songs say to do actions worthy of note, but even if we do that we end up all the same. So what's the point? Better to have a bronze medal than nothing I suppose.

The part which I find more meaningful is:

What are we angry for?
We all need a common cure

I think it means that if we think about it there is really no need to be anxious all of the time. Most of us live way better than kings of old - we have Internet, luxuries, easy food and restaurants, movies, plenty of friends and even more potential friends... The reason why everyone is so angry is because we think it's each of us against the entire world - no wonder we're always anxious!

As the song says this world can be heaven or hell, it's all a matter of how you look at it:

It's a world of laughter hidden by this world of fear and torment

Of course you may be in a shitty position in a certain moment but if people and leaders would really sit down, talk things through and coordinate we could easily get everyone to work less, be more friendly, help each other... Unfortunately we're all so busy keeping ourselves busy and worried that no one has time for that or even worse, no one is willing to take up the responsibility.

This is a pretty good Bad Religion song, it seems to have all the same themes as most bad religion songs, about how fucked up society and today's world is. WHich it is.
