Lip Gloss and Black Lyrics

If I gave you pretty enough words,
Could you paint a picture of us that works?
An emphasis on function rather than design.
Aren't you tired,
'Cause I will carry you on a broken back,
And blown out knees.
I have been where you are for a while.

Aren't you tired of being weak?
Such rage that you could scream,
All the stars right out of the sky,
And destroy the prettiest starry night.

Every evening that I die, alone,
I exhumed just a little less human,
So much more bitter and cold.
After all these images of pain,
Have cut right through you,
I will kiss every scar,
And weep you are not alone.

Then I'll show you that place in my chest,
Where my heart still tries to beat.

Aren't you tired of being weak?
Such rage that you could scream,
All the stars right out of the sky,
And destroy the prettiest starry night.

Every evening that I die,
Live, love, burn and die.

I relate this song to me and my parents. Obviously you "love" them because they're your parents. But I hate them. ok...um...we're not going to get into my anger towards me and my family but while i was telling my best friend everything thats going on in my life... and listening to this song... the combination of both, made me cry tears of anger. and let me tell you, that it was fucking awesome. atreyu rocks.

This song enpowers me to continue and get through relationships. Relationships are so hard to manage. Atreyu captures the beauty, sorrow, havoc, love, and even hate of relationships and the person you love more than anything in this world. Even they can disappoint you. this song edifies the currents of the relationship and love ocean.

i was hoping i'd find more interpretation here...

I dont know if he's saying she's thinking of suicide, maybe just deep psychological problems. I think he's saying she's focused too much on vanity and the exterior, where on the inside she's bitter and cold. "An emphasis on function rather than design."

I think in the music video he's tied up to convey his willingness to do anything for her. the cigarette ..etc. the video is what originally interested me in the meaning of these lyrics. thoughts?

My favorite Atreyu song.

"This is drawing on a personal experience I had with someone. I kind of embellished it to form the song. In a way the song could be about true love 'cause I will carry you on a broken back and blown out wings...live, love, burn, die' says it all. We live, we love, we burn with passion and desire for life and then we die. The key is to burn, to really live, experience life, feel passionate about something and give your whole being to it. Whether it's writing music, making love or painting. If you're gonna do it, do it with passion. The word burn is sort of a metaphor for true unadulterated passion." -Alex Varkatzas

As for the Shadow's Fall comment, it's doubtful, seeing as how both records were released in 2002.

Also, has anyone else noticed that Lip Gloss And Black and A Song For The Optimists are the exact oppisite of each other?

In Lip Gloss And Black he sings about how he has given everything for this person because of how much he loves them, yet in A Song For The Optimists he sings about he he'll do anything 'to get what I (he) want(s), what I (he) need(s)' All the sacrifices that he has made, and that he wants to finally work for himself. Even the 'Live, love, burn, die' part coincides with the 'Desolation, desire, exhale, pass away' part.

Just a thought.

To me seems like this figure their singing about [I’ll call him Bob] is wanting a woman [I’ll call her Gina] that’s already in a relationship, a bad one, where she does not get treated right and is abused emotionally and physically, but she still stays with her boyfriend [I’ll call him Jim] Bob is trying to tell Gina that he’s there for her is she ever needs him because he knows what its like. He’s trying to tell her that Jim is only using her for her looks, not her personality and characteristics.

If I gave you pretty enough words. Could you paint a picture of us that works? [Referring to Bob wanting Gina]

An emphasis on function rather than design. [Referring to looks over personality]

Aren’t you tired cause I will carry you, on a broken back and blown out knees, I have been where you are for a while. [Referring to the support Bob is giving Gina, And explaining he knows what it feels like]

Aren't you tired of being weak? Such rage that you could scream. All the stars right out of the sky and destroy the prettiest starry night. [Referring to Gina being abused]

Every evening that I die. [Referring to Bobs feelings Jim’s and Gina’s relation ship and how it hurts him]

I am exhumed just a little less human and a lot more bitter and cold. [x3] I am exhumed. Just a little less human.... so much more bitter and cold.... [Repeating] [Referring also to his feelings on Jim’s and Gina’s relationship]

After all these images of pain, have cut right through you, I will kiss every scar, and weep you are not alone... then I'll show you that place in my chest where my heart still tries to beat. [Referring to the support once again, and again how she is not alone]

Aren’t you tired of being weak? Such rage that you could scream. All the stars right out of the sky and destroy the prettiest starry night. Every evening that I die [Referring to Gina being abused]

Live…Love…Burn…Die [Referring to exactly what life is in 4 simple words]
