This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

Nice song and that. There was me and no one. There was no band because it was that time people were leaving. I thought oh fuck it, I am going for a walk. I just started melodising and then away we went. I wrote it in about 10 minutes. So that's that."

I think it's about a girl who makes him want to write songs, and inspires him. Kind of like his muse. "Bird" is just slang for girl, like chick. That's what makes this song so clever, she's his song 'bird'. Sigh.
