Asylum Lyrics
Contained in my cotton crib
Where I feel no turbulence
The ocean sleeps upon a shelf
And it feeds my apathy
But I can feel it in the night
Like a rain upon my skin inside a winter
But you begin to splinter
If I decide to recognize my thorns
(Chorus)
'Cause every time I see your face in a cloud
I'll feel no violence
So tilt the world until it turns me around
To my own asylum dry in the day
I'm fading away in the night
I feel the sun before it's light
And it fades away into the night
I was afraid I'll feed myself or clean this shelf
And kill the shame
But I can feel it in the night
Collect the rocks and throw them overboarders
To shake the mighty waters
And clear myself from hiding every thorn
(Chorus)
And we grow
For we gone away right out the window
You judged a fool for hating
(Chorus)
Where I feel no turbulence
The ocean sleeps upon a shelf
And it feeds my apathy
Like a rain upon my skin inside a winter
But you begin to splinter
If I decide to recognize my thorns
'Cause every time I see your face in a cloud
I'll feel no violence
So tilt the world until it turns me around
To my own asylum dry in the day
I'm fading away in the night
And it fades away into the night
I was afraid I'll feed myself or clean this shelf
And kill the shame
Collect the rocks and throw them overboarders
To shake the mighty waters
And clear myself from hiding every thorn
For we gone away right out the window
You judged a fool for hating

Since I couldn't find these lyrics anywhere on the net, I decided to listen to the song and type 'em for ya. By the way, if anybody has any corrections to make, feel free to do so.
lol... my friend and I have spent SO many hours analysing this song, it's scary. Oh, and I have a few lyric revisions for you - could be wrong, but these are what we figured out: Instead of, "I feel the sun before it's light/ And it fades away into the night/ I was afraid of, "Feed myself or clean this shelf"/ "And kill for shame" ", we got: "I feel the sun before it's light/and it fades away into the night/I was afraid/I'll feed myself/I'll clear the shelf/and kill the shame" And we've never been able to figure out exactly the bridge... meh. At any rate, I think Asylum's about Daniel's battle with depression, and his recovery. The first verse would be about when he was still on anti-depressants (Contained in my cotton crib / Where I feel no turbulence), and the second one would be about realizing that it was ok to have "extreme emotions" (in his words) and just generally getting better (hence "I'll feed myself" -eating disorder reference). There's so much more to it, and I realize that my explanation makes no sense at all, but it's just hard to put into a few words what we've been analysing for weeks. I hope it's not TOO far out there to understand.
Even though I totally acknowledge you and your friend's long hours analyzing this song, the revision you submitted isn't exactly right. Instead of "I'll feed myself/I'll clear the shelf/and kill the shame", it's "I'll feed myself/or clear this shelf/and kill for shame". I just now started understanding these lyrics, since I haven't listened to the song in a little while. I now have a slightly different perspective on this wonderfully written song.
This song is only available on the Without You single, as is Ramble.
according to http://www.silverchair.nu/index2.html the lyrics are
Contained in my cotton crib When I feeel no turbulence The ocean sleeps upon a shelf and it feeds my apathy I can feel it in the night Like rain upon my skin inside a winter But you began to splinter
If I decide to recognize my thorns
'Cause every time I see your face in a cloud I feel no violence So tilt the water 'til it turns me around To my own asylum Dry in the day and fading away in the night
I feel the sun before its light And it fades away into the night I was afraid, I feed myself I cleared the shelf and killed the shame But I can feel it in the night Collect the rocks and throw them over bodys To shake the muddy waters
And clear myself from hiding every thorn
'Cause every time I see your face in a cloud I feel no violence So tilt the water 'til it turns me around To my own asylum Dry in the day and fading away in the night
And we grow, before we go over the window You're just a fool for him
'Cause every time I see your face in a cloud I feel no violence So tilt the water 'til it turns me around To my own asylum Dry in the day and fading away in the night
but then until the silverchair official site puts up the lyrics, we'll never know. i was hoping more people would post up their interpretations of this song because i absolutely love it.. :)
Okay - quick note to the last post. I think the bridge could also possibly be:
"And we grow from a garden Where all that we know Is you're just a fool for him"
What do you think?
Such a mellow, beautiful song about the time you're alone with your thoughts and utterly at peace. Maybe my favourite Silverchair song.
"Next time I dedicate a song to you man I swear I'll sing it in key." ...man I hate Daniel so much at that point! Two hours onstage and he's complaining about the fact he's like a semitone out of key! XD
The reason that nobody hasn't posted anything yet is prolly cuz you can't find it for download. That 's totally understandable. I couln't find it on KaZaA at first. Just download the AG Satellite P2P client at http://www.audiogalaxy.com/satellite/index.php? and that'll hopefully fix ya up. Even though it's not typical Silverchair, trust me; it's worth the download!!
damn. is this one some b-side or something? haven't heard of it before, it's really disturbing. gh. ;P
indeed, not typical silverchair, but beautiful. sounds a bit like paint pastel princess and even emotion sickness at parts. lovely b-side from the "without you" single. in short i think it's about being lonely and apathetic all the time while knowing that deep inside you want to be with someone. ciao
