So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
By starlight I'll kiss you
And promise to be your one and only
I'll make you feel happy
And leave you to be lost in mine
And where will we go
What will we do?
Soon said I will know
And are you just like me?
Dead eyes, dead eyes
Are you just like me?
Her eyes, her eyes were as vacant as the seas, yeah
Dead eyes, dead eyes
Are you just like me?
And all along we knew we'd carry on
Just to belong
By starlight I know you
As lovely as a wish granted true
My life has been empty, my life has been untrue
And does she really know, who I really am?
Does she really know me at last
And are you just like me?
Dead eyes, dead eyes
Are you just like me?
Her eyes, her eyes were as vacant as the seas, yeah
Dead eyes, dead eyes
Are you just like me?
And are you just like me?
And are you just like me?
And are you just like me?
Uh, uh, uh
Uh, uh, uh
And promise to be your one and only
I'll make you feel happy
And leave you to be lost in mine
And where will we go
What will we do?
Soon said I will know
And are you just like me?
Dead eyes, dead eyes
Are you just like me?
Her eyes, her eyes were as vacant as the seas, yeah
Dead eyes, dead eyes
Are you just like me?
And all along we knew we'd carry on
Just to belong
By starlight I know you
As lovely as a wish granted true
My life has been empty, my life has been untrue
And does she really know, who I really am?
Does she really know me at last
And are you just like me?
Dead eyes, dead eyes
Are you just like me?
Her eyes, her eyes were as vacant as the seas, yeah
Dead eyes, dead eyes
Are you just like me?
And are you just like me?
And are you just like me?
And are you just like me?
Uh, uh, uh
Uh, uh, uh

this song is everything to me. everything. when i met my real love, he was listening to this song. and before we have met i've been listening to this all day long. there's no words that could the describe the way i feel while listening to this song. we are not together, though. it's too complicated and i think it's because he's not really in love with me, he loves someone else.
i think that it's about almost loving someone, but not sure if the person is completely like you. but then you try to imagine how would it be if you would be with him/her. and you want everything perfect, because before you met him/her everything was empty, meaningless. he or she brings a smile on your face and so on... thank you so much Mr. Corgan this is the perfection.
